ESA Gets A Cold Wake Up Call

After having breezed through a three-game winning streak, the softball team faced a bitter reminder that they must be on top of their game every game for the remainder of the season. Facing Chapil Hill for the first time this year, freshman outfielder Abbie Corbett had a great catch deep in right field to start the game. The offense quickly took the lead in the second inning thanks to do-it-all pitcher Tiffany Vitale who hit a three-run home run, making 4-3. Things would soon change, however, thanks in large part to the opposing pitcher's fastball and the cold weather blowing in. She held all but two batters hitless throughout the game, and eight different batters never got to see first base, racking up sixteen strikeouts. On the other hand, senior firstbaseman Kathleen McGillycuddy reached base safely three times with two hits, a walk, and one RBI. Tiffany, who had four hits total and leads the teal in batting average, would later be able to knock in her second homer of the game, but that would not be enough. Junior catcher Brittney Carroll did a stellar job working behind the plate, gunning down two runners trying to steal second base. The defense behind the pitcher was at times very good. Kathleen had an amazing defensive play on a pop-up behind the pitcher's mound with the bases loaded and two outs, running at full speed like a mad truck driver weaving through a traffic of infielders. She avoided Martika Jean-Charles but collided with Tiffany. Impressively, she managed to hold on to the ball, thus securing the third out of the inning with this web gem and saving a few runs from scoring. ESA looks to rebound from this tough loss and get back to its old winning ways with tomorrow's game against Cardinell Spellman.
