TIGERS SEAON COMES TO AN END (February 16, 2012)

The Pembina Tigers high school hockey season came to an end last night as they lost game #2 in their best-of-3 opening play-off series to the Portage Trojans by an 8-1 score. The Tigers gave up yet another early game goal just 3:08 in, and although they responded much better than the night before still trailed 2-1 after the 1st, with Cameron McNabb's cross bar and in power-play goal being the 'Cats only marker. Both sides had some good chances in the 2nd, and a good bounce here and there could have turned the advantage to Pembina, but Portage got the only goal of the period with the extra man and the Tigers would trail 3-1 going into the 3rd.The final frame was one to forget however, as Portage opened the scoring on a long shot that seemed to handcuff goalie Robin Park who had several great saves in the middle period to keep the game close. However, 4-1 soon became 5-1 and with the season all but over, Portage went for the jugular adding three goals in a 2:22 span late in the 3rd for the final score. Thus ends the Tigers 2011-12 season with another two game and out play-off exit and no Provincial berth. With only three graduating players (Brett Morrow, Cameron McNabb and Eric Harms) however, the team should be competitive in the 2012-13 season, which marks the 10th anniversary since the Tigers won their one and only Zone IV championship. The team would like to thank coaches Larry Martens and Darcy Stewart; managers Cindy Bridges and Grant Caldwell; bus driver Brent Pawich; the administrations of Cartwright, Pilot Mound, and Nellie McClung Collegiate; the fans; the sponsors; and especially the parents and players for their support and dedication this year. See you at the rink next season!

TIGERS DROP GAME ONE (February 15, 2012)

The Pembina Tigers could not recover from a putrid start Tuesday night and dropped game #1 of their best-of-three opening round play-off series to the Portage Trojans by a 7-3 score. A horrid giveaway just over a minute in had Portage up 1-0 and just 12 seconds later, the Trojans found twine again for a 2-0 score just 1:31 into the game. A wise time-out calmed the team down but a late PP marker by Portage had them completely in control at 3-0 after the 1st. The Tigers started to chip away in the 3rd as Scott Stewart and Devan Cobb scored but another defensive zone giveaway led to a 5-2 score and then a 5-on-3 led to 6-2 after two. The 3rd however was a PERFECT road period (except for the lack of scoring) as Pembina had chance after chance, taking full advantage of a slew of Portage penalties. Jayden Buchanan picked up his own rebound late in the period for the only Tigers goal but it was too little too late and a meaningless late Portage goal made the final 7-3. For the 1st period Pembina looked very much the four win team that they were this year but the 2nd was much better, and the 3rd excellent.

Game #2 goes tonight in Crystal City at 7:30 pm and the key to taking the series back to Portage on Saturday is avoiding the sloppy plays in the Tigers' own end and finding some way to finish off plays offensively. Play like the 3rd period, see you in Portage for sudden-death game #3.....play like the 1st period, time to get out the golf clubs and pack her in for the year!
Devan Cobb scored a pair of 3rd period goals vs. GVC (February 10, 2012)

TIGERS WIN HEADING INTO PLAY-OFFS (February 11, 2012)

The Pembina Tigers ended off the 2011-12 Zone IV regular season with a convincing 8-1 win over the hapless GVC Zodiacs Friday night in Cartwright. The Zodes had not won a game since beating the 'Cats back in December and came into the game with only one win. The Tigers took full advantage of the once powerful hockey school and led 2-0 after the 1st period on goals by Eric Harms and Colten Bamford. Pembina's Scott Stewart got the lone goal in the 2nd but then the team exploded for five in the 3rd period. Shawn Sanders, Kenton Collins, Devan Cobb with a pair in 18 seconds, and Stewart with his second of the game scored for the Tigers. GVC sored a power-play goal in the 3rd to break Ted Lea's shut-out bid. The defensive pairing of Brett Morrow (3 assists, +6) and Jayden Buchanan (2 assists, +5) also had big games offensively for the Tigers. The win was only the 4th of the year for the Tigers who took until game #21 to avoid the three win season that last years team had. The Tigers thus finish the regular season with a 4-15-2 record for 10 points and will face the #2 seed Portage Trojans in round one of the play-offs. The Trojans won all three games vs. the Tigers by a combind score of 18 to 7 this year, but Pembina has played much better after the Christmas Break gaining points in four of their eight games and have played Portage hard in two of their games this season. Game #1 goes Tuesday in Portage at PCU with a start time of 8:00 pm with game #2 going one night later in Crystal City with a start time of 7:30.

On Thursday the Tigers played those very same Trojans and were beaten 6-3 after a particualrly slow start. The Tigers trailed 3-0 after the 1st but played the Trojans even the rest of the way (splitting a pair of goals in the 2nd and a four-pack in the 3rd) for the final score. Eric Harms, Jayden Buchanan and Scott Stewart scored for the Tigers.

On Wednesday February 3rd, the Tigers took on the first place Mountain MUstangs and played them very well. The Stangs led 2-0 after one, but the Tigers dominated the early parts of the 2nd tieing the game up early with markers coming from Eric Harms and Jayden Buchanan. Mountain scored two more in the period to lead 4-2 and kept the Tigers at bay in the 3rd but when Buchanan added his second of the game on a great individual effort late in the 3rd, the 'Cats had a chance to send yet another game to overtime. An empty netter with just 7 seconds left sealed the deal however in a 5-3 loss.

The Tigers opened the month of February with a 5-4 overtime loss to WC Miller Aces of Altona. The Aces scored only 15 seconds into the game but a couple of nice goals by Kenton Collins and Cameron McNabb had the Tigers up 2-1 after one. The Tigers went up 3-1 only to have Miller tie it up late in the middle frame. Scott Stewart scored a beauty only ten seconds after the tieing goal and Pembina would be up 4-3 going into the 3rd. Unfortunately the team gave up a shorthanded goal midway through the 3rd and the game would go into overtime, where Altona scored exactly two minutes in to win it.
