TIGERS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT ZONE BANNER (February 25, 2011)

The Pembina Lady Tigers won their second straight Zone 4 Womens's High School Hockey League championship Thursday night with a 6-0 win over Morden Thunder. Kenzie Dearsley opened the scoring just 25 seconds in and the Tigers led 1-0 after the 1st. Pembina put the game away as Carlee Milljour and Lauryn Keen with a pair (the second on her patented toe drag move) made it 4-0 after two. Shannon Mullin and Merrit Bramwell scored in the 3rd for the final score. Keen and Madison Hutchinson picked up a pair of assists. Andrea Lees picked up her 8th shut-out of the year (regular season and play-offs) while Kristin Friesen was again outstanding in the Thunder net making 57 saves. Friesen was selected play-off MVP leading the Thunder to a come from behind win over the MCI Blues in the semi-final with a pair of wins and a fantastic final where she stopped 109 shots in two games.

TIGERS TAKE GAME ONE (February 22, 2011)

The Pembina Lady Tigers won game #1 of the best-of-three Zone 4 Women's High School Hockey League final Monday night with a 5-0 win over the Morden Thunder.  A scoreless 1st period was blown wide open early in the 2nd as Shannon Mullin found the back of the net while short handed less than a minute in. Lauryn Keen scored just three minutes later and then added another at the 13:54 mark on the power play and the Tigers had a 3-0 lead. Erin Johnson made it 4-0 before periods end, and Keen finished off her hat trick late in the 3rd for the final score.  Andrea Lees had the shut-out while Kristin Friesen was outstanding in the Thunder net making 52 saves.  The Tigers took 8 minor penalties while the Thunder had 3.  The Tigers will go for their second consecutive Zone 4 banner Thursday night in Morden with a start time of 7:45 pm.

THUNDER MOVE ON TO ZONE 4 FINALS (February 20, 2011)


The Morden Thunder girls' hockey team will head to the final round of play offs after beating the MCI Blues Saturday night by a score of 5 to 2.  The Thunder scored the first goal two minutes into the game on a shot by Jillian Hoggins on an assist by Kendra Friesen.  Natalie Vandenberghe then doubled the lead with an assist from Hoggins, but before the 1st period was over Kiara Hildebrand scored for the Blues off an assist from Ellis McKnight and Kate Wiens.  Both goaltenders kept the nets empty until halfway through the 2nd period when the Blues tied up the game with a shot by Kristen Giesbrecht assisted byChebri Enns.  The Thunder girls' answered back by passing the puck around the MCI net...Vandenberghe, to Hoggins and then out to Friesen for the go ahead goal.  Not satisfied with this, it was then Sibbald to Vandenberghe and out to Hoggins who put away goal number four to end the 2nd period.  In the 3rd period, Hoggins scored the loan goal (giving her the hat trick) off an assist from Vandenberghe and Friesen.  The Thunder now advance to to the final round starting in Manitou Monday night (February 21) against the Pembina Tigers.

THUNDER EVEN SERIES (February 17, 2011)

Last night the Thunder Girls' hockey team forced game three of the first round of play-offs by beating MCI Blues 4 to 2.  Kristin Friesen was in net for the win blocking 42 of the 44 shots.  Capitalizing for the Thunder in the 1st period was Kaela Sibbald from Kailynn Williams and Kyla Groening. MCI came back in the 2nd period, scoring two unanswered goals by Kristen Giesbrecht and Larissa Giesbrecht.  However it was then Thunder's turn in the 3rd period. Seven minutes into the final frame, Jillian Hoggins went top shelf with an assist from Natalie Vandenberghe to tie the game.  With 4:49 left Vandenberghe scored the go ahead goal assisted by Kendra Friesen and Hoggins.  MCI pulled their goalie with just over a minute of play while the Thunder girls had one player in the penalty box.  Playing 6 on 4 Jillian Hoggins managed to steal the puck to score an open net goal for the victory!!!

MCI WIN OPENER (February 17, 2011)
 
The MCI Blues opened the Zone 4 Women's High School Hockey League playoffs with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over the Morden Thunder Monday night.  Kate Wiens opened the scoring in the 1st period for the Blues, but the Thunder used a strong 2nd period to storm back. Morden scored three times with tallies from Kaela Sibbald, Casey Gall and Destiny Collins before Lindy Harder replied for the Blues on the power play. Down 3-2 in the 3rd, Steph Bourne notched an early goal to tie the game 3-3. The rest of the 3rd period remained tied and it wasn't until overtime when Kiara Hildebrand ended the game giving the Blues a well earned victory.

Game #2 goes Wednesday night in Gretna with game # 3 if necessary going Saturday in Morden.
