Roger has recorded a very successful playing and coaching career at Logan High School and Marshall University. He was an All-State third baseman at Logan HIS in 1966 and later a 2nd team All Mid-American Conference third baseman in his junior year at Marshall University, During his senior year, he was captain of the 1970 baseball team.

After graduation and a three year military commitment, he coached at Logan HS where he has helped lead the Wildcats to five State Championships. He was head coach of the 1994, 2000 and 2001 WV AAA State Champions and head coach of the 2005 WV AAA State Champions. In 1984 he was assistant coach of Logan's first AA State Championship in baseball.

In 1978 and in 2002 Logan HS was Runner Up under his tutelage. He has a career coaching record of 526 wins and 235 losses.

Roger was awarded the WV Coaches Association Baseball Coach of the Year in 1994, 2000 and 2001. In 2001 he was the Mid Atlantic National High School Baseball Coaches Association, Coach of the Year. Also, in 2001, he was elected to the Logan High School Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was chosen in the inaugural class of the WV Baseball Association Coaches Hall of Fame.

Roger's son, Kevin, is the current head coach at Logan High School. Roger is his assistant and they won the AAA titles in 2021 and 2022.
