Arcadia soccer coach Matt Schultz and colleague Rob DuPrau of Olympia love soccer. You can hear their passion when discussing their newest venture. And even though the pair want nothing more than to defeat one another once the varsity season starts, they have teamed up this summer for the good of all soccer players.
The two created the Greece United Soccer Academy - a series of boys soccer camps with several different objectives for youth players.
The first camp is the Skills and Tactical Camp, running five days from June 27 - July 1.
It is not your run-of-the-mill soccer camp. The coaches are using brand new curriculum from the US Soccer Federation. The teachings were designed to really start a solid foundation with the youth soccer players in this country.
"This is brand new, cutting-edge curriculum that we are just getting," DuPrau said. "This is the stuff that will be taught from youth all the way up to the professionals. We are really excited about it."
The camp will focus on technical, tactical, physical and psychosocial aspects of soccer with something different being taught every day. They will bring back former athletes to help with instruction and will have visits from Rochester Rhinos players who will be involved in the teaching.
"We really wanted to give players the highest level of instruction at the lowest cost possible," DuPrau said. "Our goal really is to improve the understanding and skill level of the great game of soccer."
The cost for this camp, held at Arcadia, is $85 and designed for players ages 8-18. It is open to players from all areas. There are scholarships available and potential discounts through their website - www.greeceunitedsocceracademy.com.
"There will be a lot of hands-on training in small groups," Schultz said. "We will also have game play to incorporate all the skills learned. Our goal is to increase the level of every player there."
They will also be running a 5-on-5 tournament July 18-20 at Arcadia. It is open for players in seventh through 12th grade with 2011 graduates also allowed to register a team. Tournaments will be broken down by grade level and is $50 per squad.
The final event from the academy this year is designed for high school players only and is a strict conditioning camp to get them ready for the high school season. It runs August 8-12.
"All three camps offer different things but will all benefit the player," Schultz said. "We are also going to teach about good character on and off the field."
Early registration is encouraged for all of the sessions and all information can be found on the website.
"We hope this can really turn some new players on to the game of soccer," DuPrau said. "We will be using the best tools and instructors. It will be a good experience."
