Dimond couldn't stall the Kodiak Bears!

Not even Dimond could stall the Kodiak girls in their hunt for the Joe Floyd Tournament title. The Lynx gave it their best shot by running a stall offense, but the Bears found ways to score in a glacial 36-19 win during Saturday’s final game of the 47th Joe Floyd/Era Aviation Winter Classic Basketball Tournament at Kodiak High. The victory capped a three-day tournament that saw Kodiak thump Sitka (52-12) and West Valley (53-34), then beat Dimond in a competitive game for the first time in 18 years. (Kodiak won an endowment game last season.)

Kodiak had lost six straight games to perennial state power Dimond since beating the Cook Inlet Conference school 64-53 during the 1995-1996 season. The perfect tournament kept Kodiak undefeated on the season (6-0) and gave the Bears their first back-to-back Floyd titles since the girls field was added in 1972. It is the team’s eighth title overall. “This is a special group, there is no doubt about that,” Kodiak coach Amy Fogle said. “The one thing that makes this weekend more special is that we had some quality teams here. It wasn’t a walkaway by any means …anytime you win your home tournament, and you do it back-to-back, it is a big deal.”
