Team Alaska routs Team Northwest Territories

FAIRBANKS — Jess Reiter likes to win and she made sure Team Alaska came out with a win Sunday against Team Northwest Territories at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center.
Reiter, who just completed her senior season at Delta Junction, scored a game-high 26 points to lead Alaska past the Northwest Territories 82-39 in a Junior female basketball round robin game.
“Pretty awesome,” Reiter said. “I love to win. It’s good to win the first game.”
Reiter was held scoreless in the first quarter before scoring seven points in the second quarter as Alaska opened up a 37-19 halftime lead.
Reiter came alive in the second. Reiter scored eight points in the third quarter and then sealed the win with 11 points in the fourth quarter.
“Just pass the ball around and get open shots. It just happened,” Reiter said of her 26 point performance.
Reiter outscored the Northwest Territories by herself in the fourth quarter, 11-9.
Annriza Enerio scored the Northwest Territories’ first seven points points and finished with a team-high 10 points.
For Reiter and the rest of the Alaska team, it was the first time that many of them had played a game together.
“It was kind of scary; just throw a team together and play,” Reiter said.
But according to Alaska head coach Mike Young, the team settled down quickly.
“As we started to do the warmups they loosened up,” Young said.
And it showed in the first quarter. After a couple missed shots, Alaska quickly found their groove. Baskets from Maggie Zanazzo, Sadie Hodgson, Alexis Wingert and two free throws from Ashley Brink gave Alaska an early 8-2 lead they wouldn’t give up.
“Everybody on the team contributed and that’s what I’m proud of,” Young said.
Brink and Wingert teamed to give Alaska a low post presence that produced several second, third, fourth and fifth opportunities after grabbing offensive rebounds.
“For me, it’s an in and out game. If you have a good, open shot, take it,” Young said.
Alaska plays its second game of the round robin tournament at
7 p.m. today against Nunavut at the Patty Center. The Northwest Territories take on Yukon at 2 p.m.
