ALL-COUNTY GIRLS BASKETBALL 2020

The best high school girls basketball season ever in Dearborn County history?

Let the debate begin, with the recent 2019-20 campaign providing plenty of reasons to argue in its favor.

Two county teams produced their all-time scoring leaders, in Lawrenceburg’s Juliana Kemper (1,661 points) and South Dearborn’s Kyrstin Bond (1,103 in 3 seasons), while East Central’s 15th-ranked Lady Trojans won their first sectional title since 1992 en route to the state’s Elite Eight in Class 4A.

Led by six-foot freshman phenom Josie Trabel, who earned first team All-State honors from the ICGSA coaches after averaging 15.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.6 blocks, Coach Kevin Moore’s Trojans went 23-6, advancing to the regional final.

Lawrenceburg’s 5’9” Kemper, a 3-time All-State pick, Indiana Junior All-Star and Indiana Wesleyan commit, led Coach Zane White’s Tigers to 78 wins in her 4 varsity seasons. She averaged 15.8 points, 8.2 boards, 3.3 assists, 3.1 steals and 1.6 blocks in her final season, which saw LHS finish 21-4, reaching its third 3A sectional final in 4 years.

Those two, without question, share Player of the Year honors on Register Publications’ 25th annual All-Dearborn County honors team.

Newcomer of the Year goes to EC’s super sophomore Hope Fox, who merited ICGSA third team All-State kudos in her first full varsity season. The 5’8” guard, who truly shone during the Lady Trojans’ tournament drive, averaraged 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.4 steals.

Joining those 3 standouts on the 10 player All-County first team are 2 senior All-State guards - Bond, the 5’7” Columbus (Ga.) State recruit, who led the county, and Coach Doug Robertson’s Lady Knights, at 16.1 points per game (5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 2.1 steals) and EC’s 5’10” wing stalwart Brilan McCory, the Trojans’ heart and soul at 10.6 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 4.3 assists, 2.4 steals. Both are 3-time All-County selections.

East Central 5’9” junior guard/forward Kyla Maxwell, another first-teamer, again proved to be the Trojans’ secret weapon, quietly producing 5.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals per contest, with lockdown defense.

Lawrenceburg’s future doesn’t look to dim anytime soon with the return of 3 All-County first-teamers. Six-foot junior center Kierah Lowe leads the way after her breakout season of 8.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game, while sophomore forwards Kristin Roark, at 5’10” and Chloe Meyer, a feisty 5’7”, averaged 6.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.8 points, 3.6 boards, respectively.

Probably the most underrated player on the All-County first team, SD’s athletic 5’5” senior point guard Bry LaGreca, the competitive glue that held the Lady Knights together at both ends of the court, at the expense of her own stat line (3.6 ppg, 2.1 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 1.1 steals).

All-County honorable mention selections, all of whom played integral roles in their teams’ success, include East Central’s 6’2” center/forward Charsan McCory (6.2 ppg) and six-foot junior frontline sub Emma Ertel (3.8 ppg), Lawrenceburg senior guards Tristyn Dennis (5.6 ppg) and Macey Radenheimer (4.3 ppg) and Elsa Meek, South Dearborn’s 5’10” senior center/forward (4.8 ppg).

By the numbers, Register Publications’ 2020 All-Dearborn County girls basketball team consists of 10 first-team selections and 5 honorable mentions - 6 of whom are repeaters from 2019 - including 6 EC Lady Trojans, 6 Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers and 3 South Dearborn Lady Knights.
