The Amazons have been playing some of their best hockey in recent weeks. In their last four (4) games the Amazons have outscored their opponants 20-7, Of those 20 goals, 7 of them have been on the PP. On average the Amazons are outscoring their opponents by a margine of 3.75 goals per game. Tonight the Amazons extended their streak to four wins (first time all year the Amazons have won 4 in a row) and have put themselves in position to possibly come out with a late steal of 1st overall in the South Division.
For the 3rd conecutive game the Amazons gave themselves a 2-0 lead before the opponants got on the score board. Emma Malsbury got the team rolling late in the 1st period, She would tap in a rebound goal on the PP to give the Amazons a 1-0 lead. Ariana Kresic was perfect in the 1st period stopping all 4 shots she faced.
In the 2nd period, Skylar Colonna (an Affiliated player from the Red Deer Midget AAA team) recorded her 2nd AJFHL of the year. Again off of a messy rebound play on the PP, Colonna stuffed home the goal and increased the Amazons lead to 2 with 14:49 left in the second period. Just over a minute later the Chaos would cut the lead by 1. Bursey of the Chaos would pick up a loose puck along the Amazons blue line and fight through some checks, she cut through the slot and tucked in a back hander to make the score 2-1 Amazons.
With just 5:22 left in the period. Kiera Scollo would show some great individual effort to restore the 2 goal lead. Scollo would battle for a loose puck in the Chaos corner, she would deke around a defender and back hand a shot top shelf over the Chaos goalies shoulder. The score was now 3-1 for the Amazons.
In the third period the Amazons would give up 9 shots but Kresic stood tall. With just 6:17 left in the 3rd, Scollo would score her 2nd of the game and (11th) of the season and increased the Amazons lead to 3 and make the score 4-1. The Amazons killed off all 7 penalties assessed and even killed off two (2) 5-on-3 kills.
Kresic was stellar in net making 18/19 saves, many of which were on the PK. The win was Kresic's 7th of the year.
With the win tonight, the Amazons are in sole possesion of 1st in the South Division with 36 points. With a win tomorrow the Amazons will clinch 1st in the South Division. At the time of this article the Titans had beaten the Jr Eagles 4-3 in a SO and the standings are now as follows
Tomorrow the Amazons travel to Lethbridge for a noon showdown. Last weekend the Amazons blitzed the Jr Eagles for 6 and will look to increase their win streak to 5 games.
