Amazons fall 4-2 to Jr Eagles

The Amazons have been playing some excellent hockey this month. Today the Amazons looked to shore up their late surge and clinch 1st in the South but it was not to be. The Jr Eagles ended up scoring two late in the third period to take the game 4-2. The Amazons played well enough to win the game but just couldn't get the bounces they needed to finish. The Ref also called back a goal which could have turned the game entirely in the Amazons favor. 

 

In the 1st period the Jr Eagles would take a 2-0 lead. At 7:50 of the 1st, the Amazons would turn the puck over and #7 Maggie would score to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. With just 2:40 left in the 1st period the Jr Eagles would capitalize off of a loose puck in the slot and #14 Bullshields would score to increase the lead and make the score 2-0. With just 0:35 seconds left in the 1st period the Amazons would find the back of the net. Emma Maslbury would score her 1st goal of the game on the PP and cut the Jr Eagles lead to 1 and making the score 2-1. 

 

The Jr Eagles outshot the Amazons 9-8 in the 1st period. 

 

In the second period the Amazons poured on the pressure and kept the Eagles in their own end for the second period, The teams would both exchange penalties in the second. Late in the second the Amazons would once again score on the PP to tie the game. #20 Drewry picked up a loose puck in the slot from a drop pass from #27 Vick and burried the shot low blocker side. The score was now 2-2 and by the end of the period the Amazons had outshot the Jr Eagles 17-11. 

 

The third period was really back and forth and the game opened up. Both teams showed a lot of speed and skill during this period. The Amazons had tons of chances to score including a 5-on-3 in the third but just couldn't find the back of the net. 

 

At 6:28 the Jr Eagles would break the stalemate off of a rush and give themselves their second lead of the game. The score was now 3-2 for the Jr Eagles. At 3:21 left in the Jr Eagles would score the insurance marker to increase the lead to 2 and the score would end up 4-2. The Amazons would outshot the Jr Eagles 18-12 in the third period. 

 

With the loss the Amazons finish the regular season 16-8-4 and finished with 36 points on the season. That is an 11 point improvement from the 2015-2016 season when the team finished 11-14-3. 

 

The Amazons will now await who they will face in the 1st round of the playoffs. The Calgary Titans and Cochrane Chaos play Monday Feb 20th. If the Chaos win in regulation or OT then the Amazons will play the Chaos. If the Titans win in regulation or OT then the Amazons will play the Jr Eagles.
