Tonight was game #2 of the South Division Championship Series between #3 Amazons and #4 Chaos. The Amazons held a 1-0 series advantage with a come from behind win less than 24 hours on Saturday vs the Chaos. The Amazons got to work in the 1st period scoring three goals and eventually held on for the 4-2 victory. Tonight's Division Championship is the 4th in team history. The last Division Championship the Amazons won was back in 2013-2014.
In the 1st period the Amazons would get to work quckly as LaShawn Vick would score on a breakaway and give the Amazons a 1-0 lead. Vick's goal came 1:53 into the game and was her second (2) of the playoffs. The goal from the Amazons would stun the Chaos briefly but they would respond with a goal of their own. At 8:21, Bjorndahl would score on a PP to tie the game at 1-1. Just three minutes later the Amazons would respond on their own PP as Botter and Malsbury would connect on a nice in-tight passing play. The goal was Emma's 3rd of the playoffs and second on the PP. The Amazons score one more off of a scrambled play infront of the Chaos net. Loewen, Nowek and Kobrosky would all pitch in on the play with Kobrosky cleaning up the rebound to increase the Amazons lead to 2 and make the score 3-1. The goal was Kobrosky's first of the playoffs.
The Amazons struggled in the second period as the Chaos kept pressing, the shots were 9-7 in favor of the Chaos. The Amazons though would increase their lead off of a shot from Benna Thompson at 6:52 of the second period. The late goal in the period had now increased their lead to 3 and the score was now 4-1. Thompson's marker was her 1st of the playoffs.
In the third period the Amazons came out buzzing and nearly scored twice in the opening 2 minutes but just couldn't get a stick on it. Just before the halfway mark of the 3rd period the Chaos would make things interesting as #16 Bursey of the Chaos scored off of a rebound and jammed in the puck to cut the lead to 2 and the score now 4-2. From there on the Chaos got their second wind and forechecked the Amazons relentlessly. Arianna Kresic was in net for the first time in 2 weeks and played a fabulous game and stopped 15/16 shots alone in the third period.
With time winding down and both teams seeing the outcome of the game the Chaos kept up the pressure. With just under 2 minutes to play in the third period the Chaos would once again pull their goalie for the extra attacker. Kresic continued to impress in net making multiple in-tight saves. The players in-front of Kresic helped by blocking shots and tying up sticks.
The final shots ended up being 30-22 for the Chaos with Eddie stoping 28/30 shots on net.
With the sweep the Amazons will now await the winner for the North Division Championship Series between Sherwood Park and Fort Sask. That series is currently tied 1-1. This will mark the 4th time the Amazons have played for an AJFHL League Championship. The Amazons lone banner was back in 2010-2011 season. The Amazons look to win their second Title in team history.
