3/20/2017by Team Release

Sunday night the Amazons hosted the Steele for game #2 of the AJFHL Championship Series. The Amazons were looking to regroup after suffering their first playoff loss in the post season yesterday. With a PP goal scored late in the 3rd period by Sarah Botter the Amazons were able to fend of the Steele for a 2-1 win to even the series 1-1.

In the first period the Amazons came out firing on all lines. The ladies were able to set-up their game plan early and stuck to it for the whole period. Throughout the period the Amazons would generate 4-5 quality scoring chances but once again Chloe Sanderson of the Steele was up to the task.

With time winding down in the 1st the Amazons would strike to open the scoring. Sarah Kendall would win a faceoff in the Steele zone, Scollo would pass the puck back to Brenna Thompson who fired a quick wrist shot on net, Kendall would move to the front of the net and just get a stick on the shot to tip it past Sanderson's glove.  The Amazons would outshoot the Steele 12-6 in the 1st period.

The second period would be a scoreless period but the action was just as good. Both teams opened up a little bit and exchanged scoring chances. Half way through the frame Scollo would be set-up by line-mate Kendall in the high slot, the pass was perfectly placed on Scollo's stick. She shot the puck but Sanderson robbed Scollo of a sure goal with a tremendous glove save.  At the other end of the ice, Arianna Kresic was making her second playoff game appearance and was perfect through 2 periods. After two periods of play the Amazons held a 26-18 advantage in the shots

In the third period the pace would quicken and both teams really battled hard on the ice. At the 12:45 mark of the 3rd period the Amazons would get called for hooking and would go on their first and only PK of the game. The Amazons were successful at keeping the Steele to the outside and didn't allow any scoring chances.

With the penalty killed the Amazons returned to 5-on-5 play and looking to score another goal to further their lead. Just 30 second after killing their penalty the Steele would get on the board. Paige Peach would pick up a loose puck in the Amazons zone and would score on a back handed shot which would beat Kresic. The goal would tie the game 1-1 with 12:17 left to go in the 3rd period.

The Amazons and Steele continued to battle and at 5:57 of the 3rd the Amazons would strike. The Steele would be called for hooking which would send the Amazons to their 2nd PP of the game. The Amazons coaching staff called a time out as the opening faceoff of the PP would be in the offensive zone. The 1st PP unite was sent on the ice and successfully scored just 8 seconds into the PP. Botter would win the faceoff to Simpson, who passed the puck to Anderson, Anderson fed the puck to Botter who was in the high slot. Botter let a back hand shot go as she went to the right and the goalie was going to the left. The goal would ultimately be the game winner and gave the Amazons their second lead of the night and made the score 2-1.

The Amazons knew the Steele would pull their goalie looking for the 6-on-5 advantage but the Amazons kept pressing and didn't give the Steele a lot of opportunities to pull their goalie. When the Steele did finally manage to pull their goalie there was only :30 seconds left in the game and the Amazons did an excellent job of clearing the puck.

There would be one final bit of drama to the game as the clock ran down prematurely on an iceing and one final play with just 0:04 left on the clock in the Amazons end. The Amazons won the faceoff and killed the remaining time to preserve the 2-1 victory. The final shots on net were 33-31 for the Amazons.

The series is all tied up at 1-1 and now games 3-4 will take place in Sherwood Park. There has been a change to the game schedule and an updated schedule will be released in the next day or two so please watch facebook or twitter for that announcement!
