Jersey Coast Academy defeats Williamson College of the Trades
on final play, 32-29
9/10/2016 MEDIA, PENNSYLVANIA:
For the past few years, when the Jersey Coast Academy Jaguars (Toms River, NJ) and the Williamson College of Trades (Media, PA) Mechanics went head to head, fans in attendance have been awarded with a treat. But for the coaches it was something completely different.
"Whew, a lot of heavy hard pounding. Once again, both teams fought hard ... Hat's off to those guys (Willamson's coaches and players) ... They fought hard, but we fought harder," said second year coach Calvin Thompson. "They got us last year on the final play of the game and we got them this time. Fans have been awarded with great games and treats, I hope they like apples ... How about those apples. We won."
In 2015, it was a hail-marry pass that defeated the JCA, this year it was a last second field goal that sent the Mechanics to their knees in disarray.
Jersey Coast's 6-0/185 freshman kicker. Jesse Stanley (Toms River North, NJ) booted a 43-yard field goal with no time left to give Jersey Coast a 32-29 victory over Williamson College of Trade.
JCA jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on a pass and catch hook-up between sensational 6-3/180 freshman WR Jordan Hunter (Hackensack HS, NJ) and 6-6/220 sophomore QB Roy Russell (Washington, DC) as the Jaguars took advantage of great field position and needed just 2 plays to go 26-yards to go up 6-0. However, the extra point was blocked. Williamson then used great field position of their own after the Jaguars blew a fake punt and needed just 4 plays to go 24-yards capping it off with a 4-yard TD run. The extra point and Williamson lead 7-6. An intentional grounding call in the end zone against WT in the second quarter would loom big later on in the game as it gave JCA the lead again at 8-7. That is where it stood at halftime.
The third quarter was full of excitment with JCA scoring twice in a minute and six seconds to go up 22-7. Mark Moorman, a 5-8/160 pound WR/Returner out of Winslow Township HS, Sicklerville, NJ - hauled in a 24-yard TD pass from Russell and then WT's quarterback was stripped of the ball the next series with 6-0/210 safely/running-back Deon Williams (Long Branch HS, Long Branch, NJ) returning it 26-yards for the TD.
Any thoughts that JCA was going to run away with things quickly were dashed as WT scored a TD at the 3:43 mark on a 15-yard TD pass and the Mechanics then used a fumble recovery and a quick drive capped off by a 10-yard run to pull to with one point at 22-21. JCA increased their lead to 29-21 at the 8:01 mark in the 4th quarter on a 32-yard pass from Russell to Thomas Rivera, a 6-0/175 receiver out of North Bergen HS, NJ, however WT scored at the 2:39 mark on a 1-yard sneak to pull to within 29-27. WT went for a two-point conversion and got it to tie the contest at 29.
Williamson held Jersey Coast and actually got that ball back at their own 22 with just over a minute left. The problem for them was that instead of moving forward, they went backwards on two of their three plays-the last of which was a sack by relentless Dashon Copes, a 6-1/250 defensive-end out of Toms River, NJ - at the one-yard line with 40 seconds left.
A 24-yard punt by WT gave JCA excellent field position to try to win the game. The Jaguars took three shots at the end zone resulting in three incompletions to give them a 4th down at the 25-yard line with four seconds left. Rather than take a fourth shot at the end zone, they trotted out kicker Stanley - who, despite missing a 30-yard field goal attempt earlier in the game, calmly botted the 43-yard attempt to give the Jaguars the win.
"The kick earlier in the first half, my feet weren't set properly ... That was my fault," said Stanley, who never placed kicked while in high school.
"Now this kick, I had to redeem myself and win this for us."
Ironically enough, WT defeated Jersey Coast on the final play of the game last year on a 32-yard Hail Mary pass with no time left. This time around it was the Jaguars turn to win on the final play.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME:
Roy Russell - Despite various dropped passes he still threw for over 200 yards and 3 scores.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME:
Dashon Copes had 7 hurries, 3 sacks, and a fumble recovery.

Great field positions set up by punt returns by Javion Harris, a 6-1/175 pound WR/DB from Brick Township, NJ, a 55-yard punt by Deon Wiiliams, and a 40 yard interception return by Wuanyay Geeen, a 6-1/220 linebacker from Salem, NJ.
