(05/13) Ouch! The win streak for the Reed-Custer Comets came to an abrupt halt as R-C dropped an 11-3 decision to the rival Coal City Coalers at Coal City on Friday. R-C came in riding high on a 12 game win streak after clinching the Interstate Eight South Division title.
Everything looked good as the Comets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Travis Schoonover lead off with a double, advanced to third on an infield ground out. Hunter Murawski singled him home and later scored on a single by Eddie Wilkins.
Coal City added single tallies in the first and third innings, before the Comets added a run in the fourth on a two out RBI single by Neil O'Donnell. The score stood at 3-2 in favor of the Comets before the wheels came off in the fifth and sixth innings. The Coalers scored 4 times in the fifth and added 5 more runs in the sixth to take the 11-3 victory.
Jordan Walden (6-3) took the loss, pitching 5 innings. Walden gave up 6 runs, 5 earned, on 4 hits. He struck out 5 and walked 6. Eddie Wilkins worked 1 inning, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned, on 3 hits. Wilkins struck out 1 and walked 1.
Schoonover and Murawski each had 2 hits to lead the offense.
R-C is 22-5 on the season and ends the I-8 portion of their schedule with a 13-3 record.
