(5/18) The top seeded Reed-Custer Comets survived a scare from Dwight in semifinal round action of the Reed-Custer Regional Tournament on Wednesday. The Comets had to fight back from a 4-0 defecit to escape with a 5-4 win and advance to championship round action on Saturday, May 21st at 11:00 AM. The Comets will take on the winner of tomorrow's Wilmington vs Bishop McNamara semifinal game to be played at Comet Park at 4:30 PM.
Dwight took advantage of first inning wildness by Comet pitcher Jordan Walden. Walden, who no-hit Dwight early in the season, walked 4 and gave up 2 hits before being lifted in the first inning. Walden was charged with 4 earned runs.
Eddie Wilkins answered the call, however, and shut out the Trojans over 5 innings. The big right hander surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 8. He did not walk a batter.
Meanwhile, the Comet offense started to piece together some runs, scoring a single run in the first on an infield error and adding two more in the third on an RBI single by Hunter Murawski and a run scoring ground out by Wilkins.
The Comets tied the score in the fourth on a clutch 2 out single off the bat of Neil O'Donnell, driving in Travis Schooover.
R-C would score the eventual game winner on a lead off single in the fifth inning by Murawski. The speedy junior promptly swiped second, moved to third on a fly ball by Wilkins and scored on a wild pitch.
Dwight would mount a threat in the sixth. After one out, a single and bloop double put Trojan runners at second and third. Comet ace, Brent Headrick was summoned to the mound and he responded by getting a strike out and a ground out to preserve the slim Comet lead. In the seventh, with two outs, he allowed a walk, but he fanned the final batter to earn the save.
Hunter Murawski was 3 for 3 to lead the Comet offense. Murawski also had 2 of the Comets' 4 stolen bases.
R-C is 23-5 on the season.
