9/4/09: Marion Tournament - Game 1 vs. Williamson (Williamson wins 1 - 0)

The Boys Varsity soccer team started off the season at the Marion Kickoff Classic with a loss to Williamson 1 - 0.  After an even half of play the score read 0 - 0 at halftime.  Though Olympia lead most statistical categories (Corner kicks - 10, Direct kicks inside attacking half - 10), they did not put shot on net to actually challenge the keeper.  Marion did however as Max Drexler kept Olympia in the game with 12 saves.  Marion would break the scoreless tie in the 56th minute as they broke through the defense and slipped one past a charging Max Drexler.  Olympia would control play for the remaining 20 minutes hitting the post and having ample opportunities, but was unable to capitalize.  Olympia would lose the first round game 1 - 0.

9/5/09: Marion Tournament - Game 2 vs. HAC (HAC wins 2 - 1 in golden goal 1st overtime)

The boys varsity team was unable to get into the winners column finishing fourth in the Marion Tournament after a overtime loss to HAC 2 - 1.  Olympia would start the scoring in the second half as Chris Hoecker took a pass from Tony Tumia and laced a 25 yard sniper off the inside of the left post.  The spartans would maintain this lead for 6 minutes before HAC played a direct kick across the middle of the box and found a opening to slide one past a diving Max Drexler.  Olympia controlled play for a majority of the game but was unable to punch a second goal in.  HAc would find the back of the net with 3 minutes remaining in the first overtime as they used a long throw-in to the middle of the box to an opening in the defense where they would get just enough of a piece of the ball to misdirect it past Max.

Highlights:
Keeper: Max Drexler - 1 save
Scores: Chris Hoecker assisted by Tony Tumia (60th minute)

9/8/09: Olympia @ Churchville (Churchville wins 1 - 0)

In the first Monroe County match of the season, Olympia came up just short losing to a strong Churchville team by a score of 1 - 0.  After both teams had opportunities in the first half the score remained 0 - 0 at the half.  Max Drexler would make multiple saves during this span including a beautiful diving save on a shot headed upper 90 as well as a kick save on a well struck shot heading for side netting.  While our goal keeping would keep us in the game, the scoreless tie was broken in the 67th minute when Churchville sailed a free kick into the box that Max cleared.  Fortunately for Churchville the clear went right to one of their players that would head it into side netting.  The Spartans would continue to play strong right up until the final whistle, but was unable to tie the score.

Keeper: Max Drexler - 11 saves

9/10/09: Athena  @ Olympia (Athena wins 3 - 2)

Still bitten by the injury bug, Olympia would give the strong Athena Trojan squad a fight to the finish in this battle tested rivalry match.  An equally played first half would result in a 1 goal deficit for the Spartans as a miscue in the midfield left keeper Max Drexler with little of a chance and an early uphill climb for Olympia.  The trojans would strike again 12 minutes into the second half making the score 2 - 0 as a free kick sailed into the box and was unable to be cleared before an Athena player slipped it into the back of the net.  Olympia refused to go away however, as Tony Tumia responded with a blast from 30 yards out that the Athena keeper could only deflect off the post and Gayang Ayol finished the rebound ripping it into the back of the net.  Athena would come back 2 minutes later and score their third goal of the game on a rebound off a Max Drexler save making the game 3 - 1 with 8 minutes left in the game.  The Spartans would not give up and responded with a goal of their own 2 minutes later as Max Egan lasered an amazing shot from 30 yards out upper 90 that would cut the deficit back to 1.  Each team had opportunities to score in the last couple minutes of the game but would come up short.  Athena would win this game by a score of 3 - 2.

10/6/09: Olympia @ Athena - Basil Merrela (Olympia wins 1 - 0)

In a hard fought game between rival Greece schools, Olympia would beat Athena for the first time in years in an epic battle by a score of 1 - 0.  After playing to an even 0 - 0 tie in the first half, the Spartans would battle and control play for the first 10 minutes of the second half.  As fatigue set in, the Trojans gained momentum and would put the pressure on for the next 20 minutes blasting Max Drexler with a barrage of shots...but the spartan defense would not be denied, as Max Drexler was a wall and would not let a goal in on his way to his second shutout of the season.  Gayang Ayol and Ibrahima "Abe" Barry would put pressure on the Trojans all night and Abe would finally break through as he intercepted a pass in the midfield, beat a defender and then one on one with the keeper would blast a shot from just inside the 18 past the keeper for his first goal of the season, in his first game of the season coming back from his broken arm.  The Spartans would hold on for the last 6 minutes and 25 seconds as they would defeat the Democrat and Chronicle 6th ranked Trojans for the large schools and record their first win of the season!!!!

After a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Arcadia the previous time these teams battled, Olympia would have their willpower tested again in a match that would last 96 minutes before Arcadia jabbing a dagger at the hearts of the Spartans once again.  In a very physical competition, both teams battled to a scoreless tie through halftime and though each team struck a post and had opportunities, would remain scoreless through regulation.  Olympia would control play in the first overtime locking Arcadia down on their own half of the field...outshooting Arcadia 4 - 1, but unable to find the back of the net.  This included a spectacular save by the Arcadia keeper on a ball crossed by Gayang Ayol to a slashing Dave Rhoda whose header to the side netting was snagged by a diving save.  The second overtime showed alot of tired legs and two teams playing on pure emotion and heart.  Both teams played well, only Arcadia would hit a shot that was unsavable.  A ball that was crossed resulted in an Arcadia cornerkick...a nicely played corner was headed out of the box to an open Arcadia midfielder who sniped a laser of a shot to the upper 90.  That was the game...in the 96th minute, Arcadia would win on a golden goal.  Great games were played by Zaki Tawaf, Chris Hoecker, Tony Tumia, Gayang Ayol and Max Drexler in the net.
