2013 Season Summaries
Olympia opened the 2013 season with style and sportsmanship. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead and showed class in keeping the score respectable as the goals poured in early. Courtney Hill lead all scorers with 2 goals along with an assist in his varsity debut. Pedro Torres, Paul Palmgreen, Fabio Sacco and Miralem Buljina each scored 1 for the Spartans. Rider Rodriguez assisted on 2 goals and created many more to help lead the attack. Chris Stanton and Ashton Payne combined for the shutout. The score was 5 - 0 at the half and finished 6 - 0. SOG: 15, CK: 7, Saves: 2.
Our varsity team moves to 2 - 0 with a win over the Lancers in East Irondequoit! Courtney Hill continues to impress at the varsity level having his second straight game with 2 goals and 1 assist (2nd game winner in as many games!). Chris Stanton made an amazing upper 90 save with 15 minutes left when the Spartans only lead by one goal. Miralem Buljina assisted on Courtney's first goal. Miralem would carem a PK off the post but then bounce back and play a key role in the win starting the run that lead to the 3rd goal. Rider Rodriguez locked up the win with a great finish off a brilliant ball from Courtney!
The boys varsity lost a tough game to Greece Arcadia in overtime 2 - 1 on a very hot and humid day. The Spartans fell behind 1 - 0 midway through the first half. They would even the score just before the midway mark as Paul Palmgreen played a restart into the box which Mohammad Marini flicked on with his head past the keeper. After a scoreless second half with each team having opportunities, the Spartans would give up a goal midway through the first overtime. Olympia falls to 2 - 1 overall and 1 - 1 in the league. Chris Stanton was amazing in goal making multiple diving saves to keep the Spartans in the game. Chris had 7 saves total.
The Spartans improved to 3 - 1 overall and 2 - 1 in the division with a come from behind victory over the previously unbeaten Odyssey Leopards. The Spartans trailed 1 - 0 at the half though they controlled much of the play. After a hard fought back and forth 30 minutes of second half action, Olympia finally broke through to even the score as Danny Dang played a dangerous ball into the box that the Leopards misplayed into their own goal. Just over a minute later the Spartans were fouled outside the box. Courtney Hill would strike again (3 game winners this year) with a free kick around the wall and off the post into the back of the net to give the Spartans the 2 - 1 lead and eventual victory. An amazing effort by all! Paul Palmgreen and Miralem Buljina controlled the midfield, Fabio Sacco was very dangerous on the outside and Mohammad Marini continues to control the air and lead the defense in their spectacular play. Chris Stanton made 7 saves including a couple clutch saves in the last few minutes. Great game Olympia Spartans Soccer!
Spartans improve to 4 - 1 with a 5 - 0 win over SOTA today. Courtney got another game winner (4th this year) to kick off the scoring while Paul Palmgreen had a goal and 2 assists. Mohammad Marini had a goal and an assist. Rider Rodriguez and Danny Dang each scored 1 goal each while Fabio Sacco and Duc Dang each had an assist.
Spartans won their 3rd straight game today with a 1 - 0 victory over World of Inquiry. Mohammad Marini broke the scoreless tie with an authoritative header to the upper 90 from a restart by Paul Palmgreen. Chris Stanton notched his first full game shutout (2 total on season) making a few crucial saves late to keep the lead. Olympia moves to 5 - 1 on the season.
Our varsity boys lost their 2nd game of the season last night at home to Batavia/Alexander 1 - 0. Olympia controlled play most of the game but was unable to finish around goal and just ran out of time. The Spartans look to rebound against Charlotte on Friday.
Olympia bounced back nicely from a disappointing defeat to Batavia 1 - 0 with a 8 - 1 win over Charlotte Leadership School. Duc Dang scored 2 goals while Pedro Torres, Noah Mohamed (also 1 assist), Hader Mohamed, Rider Rodriguez (also 1 assist), Dylan Borrelli and GK Chris Stanton each had 1 goal apiece. Fabio Sacco had 2 assists while Miralem Buljina, Paul Palmgreen each had 1 assist. The Spartans move to 6 - 2 at the midway point of the season with both losses coming by 1 goal. Great start...let's keep getting better!
Olympia Boys Varsity Soccer improved to 7 - 2 overall and 3 - 2 in the division with a 3 - 0 win over East Irondequoit today. Duc Dang started the scoring off a pass from Paul Palmgreen. Paul then widened the lead with a goal himself 3 minutes later from a pass by Danny Dang. Courtney Hill finished the scoring with a brilliant header on a pass from Rider Rodriguez. Chris Stanton was stellar in net notching his 3rd shutout this year making 6 saves. The Spartan defense anchored by Mohammad Marini and Hader Mohamed continue to stymie opponents offenses. Olympia has outscored opponents this year 29 - 6 in 9 games. The Spartans are currently ranked 6th in the Lamont Super 7 Poll (Class A), and 3rd in the sectional seeding bracket. The Spartans moved to 8 - 2 on the season with a strong win over Franklin (who beat us last year) by the score of 6 - 0. The Spartans were lead by a strong defense that continually kept the ball in the attacking half of the field. Paul Palmgreen tallied 2 scores, while Fanwel Yosef, Courtney Hill, Hader Mohamed and Duc Dang all scored once. Duc has now scored in each of the last 3 games (4 goals total). Fabio Sacco continues to be one of our top assist players getting 2 in this game to reach 6 on the season. Noah Mohamed and Rider Rodriguez each assisted on goals as well. Chris Stanton notched his 4th shutout of the year making 3 saves.
Another win for the Spartan Boys Soccer team! Olympia moves to 9 - 2 overall and 3 - 2 in the division with a 5 - 0 win over the Geneva Panthers today. Danny Dang lead the way with 2 goals while Paul Palmgreen, Rider Rodriguez and Noah Mohamed each tallied 1 apiece. Dylan Borrelli, Fabio Sacco and Duc Dang assisted on goals for the Spartans who outshot their opponents 12 - 1. Ashton Payne picked up the win in goal and got his first varsity shutout. Olympia won their 5th game in a row today defeating Monroe Edison by a score of 3 - 1. Just like last year, the wind and rain played a major role in the flow of play as teams only scored with the wind at their back. Courtney Hill opened the scoring 16 minutes in as he beat 2 defenders and slotted it home with his left foot. Courtney would then get the eventual game winner and his 10th goal of the season 15 minutes later. Paul Palmgreen hit a shot from the 18 upper 90 to give the Spartans a 3 - 0 lead at half. Olympia's defense and goal keeper Chris Stanton played great in the second half keeping Monroe-Edison to only one goal on 12 shots with a blistering wind in their face. Olympia improves to 10 - 2 on the season.
Olympia fell for a 2nd time to Arcadia in 2013. The Titans scored 2 in the first half with Olympia having very few scoring opportunities. The Spartans would play better in the 2nd have only to give up a goal with 1 minute left as goal keeper Chris Stanton came out to get the ball and an Arcadia player stole the ball for a controversial goal. The Spartans fall to 10 - 3 overall and 3 - 3 in the division.
The Spartans improved to 11 - 3 with a brilliant 2 - 1 win over division rival Odyssey yesterday. Olympia played quality soccer from first whistle to last in this great team effort. After a scoreless first half, Courtney Hill played a great combination with Danny Dang to get behind the Leopard defense and slot home the opening goal in the 42nd minute. Olympia would get a PK 3 minutes later that Odyssey GK made a nice save on. The Leopards would take that momentum and score minutes later to even the score at 1 - 1. Olympia would not go away though, as they continued to control play and create scoring opportunities. The Spartans would get the game winner from Rider Rodriguez off a skip header from Mohammad Marini in the 60th minute. The defense then played great with another stellar showing by Chris Stanton in goal. This was the best soccer the Spartans have played all season as they look to keep improving heading into their final week of the regular season.
Olympia battled back from a 2 - 0 deficit late in the first half to win in double overtime 3 - 2. The Spartans celebrated senior night and sent their seniors home with a memorable win! With all seniors starting, the Spartans played even soccer with the Inventors through the first 15 minutes. Monroe Edison then broke open the scoring with a goal midway through the first half and then another 10 minutes later. Olympia would cut the lead back to 1 as Courtney capitalized on a PK for the Spartans first goal. After 30 minutes of scoreless soccer in the 2nd half, Courtney struck again tying the game on a nice combo from freshman Noah Mohamed. Neither team could get much going in the first overtime. Then, in the 92nd minute, Monroe Edison committed a foul in the box that gave Courtney an opportunity to clinch the game with his 3rd goal and 2nd PK of the night. Courtney now has a team and division leading 14 goals on the season. The Spartans move to 12 - 3 on the season and have now gone 8 - 0 out of their division and 4 - 3 in the league.
Olympia clinched its 2nd ever #1 seed in sectionals with a win in their last regular season game over Batavia 3 - 0. A very close game played well by both teams on Batavia's senior night. Courtney Hill opened the scoring when Batavia's GK made a poor clearing kick that bounced off to the left. Courtney arrived to the ball first and volleied it first time over the keepers head to get his 8th game winning goal of the season and put the Spartans ahead for good! The score remained 1 - 0 through halftime and for most of the 2nd half. Olympia then locked up the win with a goal from Miralem Buljina on a pass from Courtney Hill. Not a minute later, Courtney hit a streaking Fabio Sacco with a beautiful diagonal pass that Fabio fired upper ninety to give the Spartans the 3 - 0 win. Chris Stanton was phenomenal in net notching another shutout! The Spartans finished the regular season 13 - 3, and 5 - 3 in the division.
Spartans advance to the final four!!!! Olympia wins 5 - 4 in extra PK's after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer! Amazing game. Chris Stanton gets the game ball with a shutout and making 2 PK saves! Great game by the defense.

After their first sectional bye and their first sectional win in over 10 years, the Spartans found themselves playing the eventual State Champion Pittsford Mendon Vikings in the Sectional Semifinals. The Vikings struck early scoring on a couple of restarts with beautiful headers. After a 3 - 0 halftime deficit, Courtney Hill infused some life into the Spartans with an amazing free kick from about 30 yards out that bent around the post freezing the keeper and making the score 3 - 1. (This kick would be caught on video and make ESPN's #1 top plays the next weekend!) After the Spartans got a few more opportunities, the Vikings countered and scored 2 more goals to make the score 5 - 1 and then a goal in the last 10 seconds to make the final 6 - 1. The Spartans finish the year 13 – 4 – 1. Great season!

Team will was recognized (received a plaque) at the Section V Banquet for being the Class "A" sectional #1 seed. Coach DuPrau and Courtney Hill were recognized for Coach of the year and Player of the year awards at the banquet. It was a nice evening recognizing the Spartan Program as a whole....remember, none of these awards happen without the collective work of everyone in our program.
