Goaltender Rules

Goaltender Rules

At the discretion of the referees - if a goaltender is assessed a game misconduct or a game ejection or any other penalty that would normally cause a player to be disallowed from completing a game he will be allowed to continue play for the duration of the game. Any game misconduct issued will be served in the offending goaltender’s next regularly scheduled league game. Until such a suspension is served in full, the goaltender may not participate in any other league games.

If during the remainder of the game, the goaltender is assessed a second misconduct/ejection or penalty that would cause him to be disallowed from completing a game, he will be told to leave the game immediately and any suspensions will be added to the penalties previously assessed.

If a goaltender through ejection/suspension or injury is not able to complete a game, the team has the following options:

  1. Borrow a goaltender from one of the teams waiting to play the next scheduled game. Teams must play with an extra skater until a goalie is ready to play.
  2. Dress an active player into goaltender equipment. Teams must play with an extra skater until a goalie is ready to play.
  3. Play with an extra skater and no goaltender

In any cases the team must have a skater serve any penalty’s the goaltender was assessed. Any replacement goaltenders are not entitled to a warm-up and may only enter the game at a stoppage in play. Once the goalie is off the ice the game will resume with option 3, the team can still switch to option 1 or 2 for the remainder of the game.

If the regular goaltender for a given team is unavailable or late to play a league game during the regular season, the team has several choices.

  1. Use any goaltender from within the league.
  2. Use any “adult league” goaltender.
  3. Dress a player in full goaltender equipment.
  4. Play with 6 skaters until the goaltender is ready. The goaltender can only enter the game at a stoppage of play.

Backup and any other replacement goaltenders are exempt from the league uniform policy; however, the regular goaltender must have a coloured jersey that can be differentiated from opposing team’s goalie. All goaltenders must also wear a CSA-certified mask or helmet-cage combination.

During the playoffs, if the regular goaltender is unavailable, the team has the following choices:

  1. Use the backup goaltender as designated on the team roster.
  2. Use any goaltender from within the league in the team’s division or lower. The lowest division teams may also use a goaltender from one division above.
  3. Use a goaltender of their own choosing after obtaining permission from the league.
  4. Dress a player in full goaltender equipment
  5. Play with 6 skaters until the goaltender is ready. The goaltender can only enter the game at a stoppage of play.

Note that only male goalies may be used within the league.
