IN MEMORIAM

Tyler McLellan was born in Waltham, Massachusetts on the 8th day of April, 1993. He and his family moved to Stuart, Florida in 1999. Tyler attended various elementary and middle schools before reaching Martin County High School. For many years prior, Tyler played youth baseball, as well as youth football for the Stuart Hornets, before attending MCHS.

On July 17, 2008, Tyler had two options of personal activity. He could either go away to Orlando for a few days with friends, or he could accompany another friend, Patricia Snyder, and comfort her during her time of need while she received treatment at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.

He chose the latter. How many 15 year olds do you know who would do that?

At 3:26 pm EDT on that date, the Beech A-36 aircraft Tyler and Snyder were passenger’s on and piloted by Harlan E. Northcutt, struck an instrument landing system antenna upon failing to gain altitude only minutes after receiving clearance for takeoff. The plane
crashed and then burst into flames near runway #5 at Vandenberg Airport in Tampa.

Northcutt, an 81-year old licensed FAA pilot, volunteered for the “Angel Flight” mission after receiving notice of such through Mercy Flight Southeast, Inc.

Tyler was strong, yet sensitive and very compassionate. He had grown into a wonderful young man. To do what he did for a friend, not only showed his integrity, it displayed his sensitivity to the feelings of those who need the small gesture of companionship in order to survive significant moments of hardship in their lives.  Tyler gave his life while helping another person.  At the tender age of fifteen, Tyler had already discovered something many adults never learn during their entire lifetime. He discovered compassion and the true meaning of “loyalty” to a friend . . .by
being a “true friend”.
