Kids/Teens Program

SSSF KIDS & TEENS PROGRAM

Come train with the South Shore's longest-running and most successful kids/teens MMA & sport grappling program. Training kids into champions on and off the mats for over 15 years!

Our younger students train in the various arts that make up mixed martial arts at a contact level suitable for children. The main arts we teach them are wrestling, submission grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, kickboxing, boxing and karate. All the best aspects of these arts come together as one to form the SSSF MMA style.  A typical class incorporates various exercises as a warm up along with boxing, wrestling and grappling drills and a post-workout stretching session.

We are constantly teaching our kids the importance of working with each other and helping out the newer students in order to create an atmosphere of camaraderie, respect and humbleness. We teach them that you can only get as good as your training partners so they must always strive to improve not only themselves but also the other kids in the class.

This is not a traditional kids martial arts class where the students almost never make contact with each other and spend most of their time memorizing specific moves and practicing them in the mirror. There is contact in our classes, especially in the grappling portion of class. It is a fact that this "live-active sparring" creates attributes such as speed, strength, timing and coordination far better than any class where the students simply memorize moves in a mirror and go through the motions.

During the striking portion of the class the students will often "spar" or box/kickbox with each other but this is always done at a suitable contact level and only after the student has spent several hours learning how to defend themselves properly. We teach the kids how to spar properly and that it is not an exercise in hurting anyone. Only when a student has grasped this concept is he allowed to spar with other students who have also learned how to spar properly. More often than not, the kid students will be sparring very lightly with one of the instructors or one of the more experienced students so that the instructor or senior student can control the pace, teach the other student what they may be doing wrong and most importantly, ensure that no one gets hurt.

At SSSF our goal is for our kid students to one day become strong, fit, well-rounded and respectful martial artists and training with light contact is the only way. They must learn through trial and error. They must experience things like being defeated and defeating someone in training. They must learn to work through obstacles and how to overcome adversity. These things will teach them more about being humble and respectful than anything else in the world. The life lessons learned through this type of training will build character in any child (or any adult for that matter). We are not in the business of taking your money and basically babysitting your child for an hour or two while they learn almost nothing and collect trophy belts that have nothing to do with developing legitimate martial art skills.

The kids are encouraged to compete in the various tournaments that SSSF frequents. These are always a fun day for the kids as well as the parents and coaches. Many of our kid students become good friends outside of the gym. South Shore Sportfighting is proud to have one of the most succesful kids/teens competition teams in all of New England.

We have had numerous success stories come out of our kids' program ranging from students winning multiple 1st place trophies in various tournaments to students becoming MMA champions. In addition to our students' success on the competition front, parents often tell us they see positive results at school and home as their child develops more and more self-esteem and confidence through training.

The SSSF Kids Program is all about creating well-rounded, humble athletes and competitors who will be winners on and off the mats. Contact us today for more info on our kids/teens programs or to set up a time to come check out the gym.
