2022-2023: Quest for Sectional 4-Peat Falls Short

While there may be some disappointment in the overall outcome of the season, it still was a very successful season for a variety of reasons.  The Trojans were defeated in the 1st round of Sectional 14 by Columbus East, ending a 3-year (9-0) Sectional run for the graduating class of '23.

Along the way, the Trojans were able to capture their 3rd straight EIAC title, their 4th in the past five seasons, and a combined 34-1 record in conference games during that 5-year span.  Additionally, the Trojans were selected to play in the historic New Castle gym as part of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in late December.  The Trojans faced the 21-22 4A state champion, Noblesville Millers, in the 1st round.  After getting off to a great start and leading after the 1st quarter, 18-10, the Millers dominated the rest of the way forcing the Trojans to play in the consolation game vs. Mishawaka Marian.  In the consoloation game, the Trojans were victorious and finished 3rd in the event.  This season the Trojans played their most difficult non-conference schedule they had ever had.  That level of competition led to an overall record of (15-11).  It's the 11th season in a row with 11 or more wins in a season.  The list of Indiana HS teams that have accomplished that feat is: Bedford North Lawrence, East Central, Homestead, and Penn.

This group of seniors is a special one.  Just like the senior classes to come before them, they took the standard of success and expanded it for the groups to come behind them.  They will be a group that is very difficult to replace and it's disappointing we weren't able to finish the job of the 4-Peat but it's a 4-year run that everyone will be able to look back on with great appreciation, enjoyment, and memories.

The 22-23 JV team finished the season at (17-3) and also won the EIAC JV division.  The group of sophomores and freshman competed extremely hard at the defensive end and started to expand their offensive abilities as the season progressed.   With the graduation of (7) seniors, and only (2) returning Varsity players, this group of kids will be pressed into Varsity action next season.

2021-2022: Trojans Complete the 3-Peat As Sectional Champs!

(22-5; 7-0 in EIAC)

The East Central Girls cut down the nets in Bloomington for the 7th Sectional championship in program history and their 3rd in a row.  It took a hard fought physical 32 minute battle to beat a very good Columbus East team in the final after defeating Bloomington South in the semi-finals, 71-45, and also a close 41-38 opening round win vs. Columbus North, to earn the championship.

The Trojan also completed a perfect 7-0 EIAC record this season to earn a 10th conference championship in school history.  This also marks consecutive seasons as outright champions and a 3rd championship in the past four seasons, and 6th in Coach Moore's 13 years as head coach (five 2nd place finishes as well).   The current Sr. class also boasts a 27-1 conference record during their four years at EC.  During the conference campaign, the Trojans allowed an average of 30.0 points a game while scoring 59.7 ppg.  Only one opponent scored 40+ points in conference contests as Rushville, who finished 2nd in the standings at 6-1, held EC to a 52-40 win on their home floor in early January.  Additionally, the JV team won the EIAC for 3rd straight season as well with a perfect 7-0 record as well.

Additionally, the EC Girls won three games in two days down in Scottsburg's famed Charles E. Meyer Gym over the Winter break.  The Trojans won their opening game of pool play against the host Scottsburg Warriorettes, by a final tally of 53-39.  Jr. Josie Trabel led the team in scoring with 18 points while Jr. Hope Fox added 14 points and Jr. Caitlyn Dick scoring a career high 11 points, including 3/5 shooting from beyond the arc.

2020-2021: Time Runs Out on Historic Season

(19-5; 7-0 EIAC Record)

East Central Girls Basketball endured both a challenging and rewarding season within the 47th chapter of the program.  The banner season concluded with a one point loss to Bedford North Lawrence on their home court in a Regional Semifinal but the entire journey will remain a memorable one.  For the first time in school history the EC Girls team accomplished winning consecutive Sectional championships.  Also, a 9th conference championship in school history was added to the trophy case - marking only the 2nd occasion a team has won both Conference and Sectional championships in the same season, the other being 1992.

Finishing the season 19-5, we were very thankful to have an opportunity to play a total of 24 games.  Many teams across the state weren't able to play a full schedule, including our program, therefore the preparation by both players and staff for every game was met with enthusiasm.

Expectations for this season were high from the beginning with both preseason polls reflecting so with the initial ICGSA rankings having EC 11th in 4A and a 15th overall ranking within the IBCA poll.  Throughout the season each poll had the Trojans highly ranked as well with high water marks of 4th overall in ICGSA and 6th in the IBCA - both the highest rankings in school history.

A big reason for the success this season were the (4) Seniors.  Kyla Maxwell departs as the winningest player in program history with an overall mark of 76-28, among many additional accolades.  Charsan McCory transformed from a traditional post-player into a career 29% 3pt. shooter while earning Most Improved Player recognition as a Sophomore.  Emma Ertel brought many intangibles to the table which helped her earn 30 career starts and also a Best Teammate award her Sophomore year.  Natalie Schnell set the tone early in her playing career winning the Freshman Offensive MVP award while making nearly 50 varsity appearances.  All four also played a huge part in helping out with our Youth Program the past four years as well.

The calling card once again this season was defense as the Trojans held opponents to an average of 39.1 points per game.  Marking the third consecutive season opponents were held to an average below 40, and six of the past nine seasons overall.

Offensively much of the load was carried by So. Josie Trabel's 17.0 points per game and Jr. Hope Fox's 14.5 ppg.  So. Julia Tiemann was inserted into a starter's role and averaged 4.0 ppg while shooting 70% from the FT line.  Newcomer Jr. Ashley Nobbe averaged 3.9 ppg, making the 3rd most 3pt. FG's on the team.  So. Laney Baker's late season bloom witnessed her scoring average for the season increase to 3.5 ppg, highlighted by a 38% mark behind the arc.

Throughout the season varsity playing experience came for several underclassmen as well, including Jr. classmates Avery Daniels, Hailey May, and Makenzie Vignale.  The Sophomore bunch of Addy Arnult, Brooke Carpenter and Caitlyn Dick also saw minutes. Those two classes as a whole will help shape what's on the horizon for the Program, especially considering their contributions to a 15-1 JV record which they also help set a scoring record average of 51.1 points a game.

The 2020-21 season will certainly go down as one of most memorable for many reasons as the focus for the future looks towards continued success.

2019-2020: A Banner Season

(Most Wins in School History w/ 23-6 Record)

The 19-20 Varsity team achieved more success than any other team in East Central Girls Basketball history.  They won a very difficult Sectional 14 for the first time in class basketball history. This was no small feat as they defeated #9 ranked Martinsville on Tuesday, top-25 and host school Bloomington South on Friday, and top-25 Columbus East in the championship.  During that 5-day stretch, the team spent close to 13 hours on a bus and defeated three top-25 teams which no other Sectional winner in 2020 can say. The following weekend, hey won a Regional morning game to advance to the Elite-8 where they were defeated by Bedford North Lawrence in a highly competitive game.

As the season began, the team was in a transition period as there were (6) seniors that graduated the year before.  It was going to be a very young Varsity team with very little Varsity experience on the roster. Also, during the off-season, veterans Megan Caudy and Charsan McCory were injured and unable to play as the season began.  Senior Brilan McCory and junior Kyla Maxwell were really the only two players with any Varsity experience as the season tipped off. As the inexperienced players gained Varsity experience and some of the injured players started to return to the lineup, the team really began to play well around Christmas time.  At one point during the year, and after a 2-point loss on a buzzer beater vs. Sectional opponent, Columbus North, the Trojans sat at 5-4. That next game, they defeated a top-10 Kentucky team in Scott County during the Indiana vs. Kentucky Cup Challenge and really started to form into the team that contended for a Regional Championship.  Additionally, they won the Haag Ford & Skyline Chili East Central Holiday Tournament for the first time. Over the course of the last 20 games of the season, the Trojans only lost two games, both to Bedford North Lawrence (once in early January and again in the Regional final). The (3) graduating seniors will leave a very lasting impact on the Program on and off the court.  Brilan McCory finished her career with incredible numbers and has left a legacy built on dedication and consistency. Megan Caudy overcame injuries during her career and provided a great learning lesson for our younger kids to see how you battle adversity with hard work and positivity. Karlie Hahn transferred in late and showed what it meant to be a good teammate, very coachable, and how hard work can be your greatest skill!  Our underclassmen classes have tremendous skill/talent and this success achieved this season could be just the start of something very special due to the depth and youth in the Program.

The Varsity team set many team records and many players had tremendous individual seasons where game, season, and career records were broken or top-5 performances were reached.

A Recap of the Very Successful 18-19 Season

While the overtime loss to eventual Sectional Champ, Bloomington South, ended our season in the Sectional semi-final, 2018-2019 was still another banner season in the East Central Girls Basketball Program.  The Varsity team played a very difficult schedule (maybe the most difficult in the 10 years under this coaching staff) and finished with the 2nd most wins in Program history with an (18-7) overall record.  Additionally, for the 4th time in 8 seasons, the Trojans won the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conferene championship while going a perfect (7-0) in conference play.   The JV team finished with an (18-5) record and (6-1) in EIAC play which earned them 2nd place in the conference.  In our 3rd annual Holiday Tournament, the Varisty team lost a 1-point game in the Varsity final to a very talented Dixie Heights team out of Kentucky, the JV Trojans won the JV bracket with a win over Salem.  The Program will be losing (6) tremendous kids to graduation who dedicated a lot of time to this Program over the years.  However, just like the (9) graduating classes before them, it's now time for other kids to step up and carry on the winning tradition we have built.  The (18) wins marks the 7th year in a row that East Central has won (16) or more games which puts the Program in very exclusive company.

17-18 Season Recap

Written by: Assistant Coach, Andy Shaver

Many observers of the 2017-18 season could simply dissect the overall record and decide whether or not it was a successful season.  To outsiders though, there were many instances and ingredients throughout the year which didn’t necessarily come to surface, but helped galvanize this team and once again took them to 16+ wins on the season for the 6th straight season (which only 12 other Programs in the state can claim).

Often spoken among the players and coaches throughout the season was reasserting the “Together” ideologies associated with the Program.  Back in June a foundation was set for this team to buy-in and become a well-rounded "team".  Once the team reassembled in October, a schedule of non-conference opponents awaited having combined for 11 State Titles in the past 10 years.  Being battle tested for later in the season was the expectation.  Perfectly laid plans would've witnessed a set player rotation throughout the season.  Often times though plans are adjusted on the fly and this season was a prime example.

Due to injuries and ailments, there were a total of 10 different starting lineup combinations throughout the campaign.  None of those rotations saw more than nine games and no more than six times consecutively.  At no point did the team ever adopt a sense of feeling sorry for themselves.  Instead, everyone bought into each learning opportunity, with every player on the roster contributing.

Of the (26) games played, there were eight different leading scorers in a game.  There were seven different players who led the team in rebounding at least once.  There were also seven separate players who led the team in assists for a contest as well.  In terms of Player Efficiency Rating, six players earned game high honors, with no single player accumulating more than six for the entire year.  These stats are a direct reflection of the depth and team-first approach that was set forth.  The ever-changing lineups and available roster perhaps attributed to the team falling short of their goals set forth at the beginning of the season.  An overtime loss in the semi-finals of the East Central Holiday Shootout paved the way for a well earned 3rd place finish.   In conference play, a 4-3 mark placed the Trojans in 4th place overall, only the 2nd time in Coach Moore's tenure the Trojans didn't win or finish 2nd in conference.  The 10 total losses for the season came at the hands of eight different opponents.  Despite the various defeats, there was excitement among the coaches and players heading towards the end of January as the regular season came to a close and the team essentially was "healthy" for the first time since early December.

High hopes for the post-season were present with East Central hosting Sectional play for the first time since 2011.  A much healthier team took the court in the first round game against the Bloomington South Panthers.  Feeding off energy of a roster reunited and a host of fans providing a spirited home court advantage, a well-earned win was rewarded.  The victory over the Panthers was the first in school history, advancing the Trojans to a semifinal match against Bloomington North.  Momentum and teamwork aided a victory in front of another energized home crowd a few nights later against the Cougars of Bloomington North.  A Sectional Championship versus a yearly non-conference foe in Columbus East was set for the following night.  The championship match was a true battle of attrition for both sides.  Each team focused on taking away the other’s strengths. Therefore points were difficult to come by.  After one quarter of play, the Trojans held a 7-5 lead.  Within the second quarter the lead stretched to as many as seven points. A halftime score of 17-13 was in favor of East Central.  Columbus East was able to generate nearly as much scoring in the third quarter than they had produced in the first half.  Heading into the final eight minutes, the Olympians carried a two point advantage.  Their lead would not exceed more than four points as the contest was within a single possession for both sides in the closing moments.  After a made three-pointer by East Central with a little over a minute remaining, the Trojans reclaimed the lead at 31-30.  To Columbus East’s credit, they continued to battle to the end and regained a deciding lead, earning them a championship.

For a team who endured continued adversity throughout this particular season, the ending didn’t feel completely warranted.  Disbelief slowly turned to realization as a season was now over.  For a few, high school playing careers finished as well.  Senior’s Lauryn Helton, Paige Hoog, and Hayley Tippitt all helped build a culture of togetherness.  Their time invested with the Program also included numerous hours of assisting with youth basketball.  Each will leave their marks in the record books as well.  Various team and individual records will highlight these three class of 2018 names.  Over four years, a record of (72-38) overall ranks towards the top of any stretch in Program history.   Included in those many wins was also a milestone achievement for Coach Moore.  With the semifinal victory during Sectionals over Bloomington North, Coach Moore became the all-time leader in wins in school history in just (9) seasons on the sideline.

Looking towards the future now brings higher hopes and aspirations.  Experience will return in the form of seven players starting at least three games during the 2017-18 season.  Add in the seasoning of players from a JV team finishing with a (20-3) overall record and a Freshman team compiling a (16-4) record while winning two tournaments, excitement has already started to build for next season.

Regardless of how this past season is viewed in either a qualitative or quantitative way, it was indeed successful in many measures.  The team was able reach at least 16 wins for a sixth consecutive year – one of only 13 teams in the state of Indiana able to make this claim.  More importantly an entire team was introduced to multiple peaks and valleys which they will continue to carry with each other – Together.

The Varsity team also won the Harrison, Ohio Holiday Tournament for the 3rd consecutive year.  The (4) Varsity losses were to three teams: Noblesville, Lebanon, and Columbus North (twice) that all went

on to play in Regional Championship games.  Columbus North, the team that defeated the Trojans 52-49 and ended their season, marched through the 4A state tournament to win the 4A State Title with a 28-1 record on the season.  Also, Richmond, Rushville, and Jac-Cen-Del were teams that the Trojans defeated during the regular season that won their respective Sectionals.  The Trojans finished the season ranked #13 in the ICGSA coaches poll, 18th in the Sagarin Rating, and finished 30th in the state in defensive average (37.7ppg), 18th in average margin of victory (19.8ppg), and 49th in scoring at 57.4ppg.

Obviously this season was one for the record books with all the Varsity success but the (18-4) JV record, and (16-4) Freshman team record shows we are building for future success as well.  The JV team won the Harrison, Ohio Holiday Tournament for the 4th consecutive year while the freshman team won the regular season EIAC title and EIAC tournament championship.  Additionally, the freshman also won the Harrison, Ohio Holiday Tournament for the 1st time.

After a very successful summer, this group of kids came in with very high expectations and lived up to nearly all of them.  Over the course of the season, there were many high moments and very few low moments.  The depth, athleticism, and overall competiveness of this group showed through day in and day out.  This group went undefeated in EIAC games, winning those 10 games by an average of 30ppg!  Outside of the conference, the group improved and went 7-4, however, Shelbyville was the only team from Sectional 14 that a victory was achieved against.  That will be the next step...defeating Sectional opponents on a regular basis.  The season ended with a disappointing 2-point loss to Bloomington North after holding a lead for much of the game (including a 20-7 lead after the 1st quarter).

As stated earlier, there were countless high moments on the season including (but not secluded to): 11 different players scoring in double-figures throughout the season, setting defensive average and defensive field goal percentage records for the season, hitting (9) 3-point FG's in one half vs. South Dearborn, only losing (1) game at home, etc.

Here is a list of all the records that were achieved this season:

Single-Game Records:

  • 10 made 3pt Field Goals vs. SD
  • 19% Defensive FG vs. Franklin County
  • 29 Steals vs. Shelbyville
  • 26 FTs made vs. Shelbyville
  • 39 FTs attempted vs. South Dearborn

Season Records:

  • 57.4 points per game (broke 1985 record)
  • 38.8 points allowed per game (broke 1981 record)
  • 18.6 margin of victory (old record was 10ppg)
  • 32% defensive FG% (broke last year’s mark)
  • 810 rebounds  (broke 1990 record)
  • 302 assists (broke 2011 record of 266)
  • 17 wins is 2nd most all-time (18-3 is the record)
  • 428 FTs attempted is 2nd most all-time (443)

2011-2012 Season

EIAC Conference Championships Won at all Three Levels!

Sitting: Claire Volpenhein, Danni McClure, Jenna Hountz, Amber Erhart, Sami Turner

Standing: Peyton Napier, Rebecca Weber, Sarah Packer, Brooke Packer, Nicki Roell, Brittanie Botlen, Coach Moore

After losing 4 starters and 5 seniors to graduation, and only returning two players that saw significant Varisty action, there was justified nervousness heading into the season.  However, a great off-season with kids working their tales off led those inside of the Program to think that we could achieve great success with such a young team.  It turns out, the 2011-2012 season was one that should leave a mark on the Program for years to come.  The players formed a lofty set of team goals at the beginning of the year.  Unfortunately, we didn't achieve all of those, but one we did achieve was winning the EIAC conference title for the first time in 14 years (finished 9-1 in conference and tied with Franklin County for title).  On top of our conference opponents, we played a very difficult non-conference schedule which led our record to a very disappointing 2-9 outside of the conference.  However, our non-conference opponents had a winning percentage of nearly 70%, which shows the level of competition we play outside of the EIAC.  In a very competitive game, we lost in the Sectional semi-finals to a talented Columbus East team, 53-45.  In the end, our season ended with an 11-10 overall record.  There were some very thrilling games throughout the season (home win vs. Franklin County, comeback win to clinch EIAC title vs. South Dearborn), some rather heartbreaking games (1-point loss @ Shelbyville, 2-point OT loss vs. Hamilton (OH)), and some very frustrating games (loss at home vs. Richmond, blowout loss @ Connersville).  However, with such a young and inexperience d group, it was to be expected.  This group exceeded expectations of those outside of the Program and has laid down the foundation of winning for the future.  We are very proud and excited about what the future holds, with only graduating two seniors (Sarah Packer & Peyton Napier).

We set team records for defensive FG% for the third consecutive season (we held teams to only 35% shooting from the field) and the other team record set was for FT-attempts in a season (443).  We also had some indiviuals set some impressive records.  Senior Sarah Packer broke the school record for FT-attempts in a game with 22 @ Jennings County, which also ranks as the 5th most all-time in the state of Indiana record books.  Her sister, Brooke also set the all-time Program player effeciency record for a game with a (+44) in a loss vs. Richmond.

2010-2011 Season

A Season To Build Upon: Program Record 44-10

Sitting: Taylor Henry, Beth Moorman, Emily Lehman, Courtney Seamon, Nicole Erhart

Standing: Varsity Asst. Rick Moorman, Danni McClure, Becca Weber, Sarah Packer, Ellen Thomas, Amber Erhart, Jenna Hountz, Varsity Head Coach Kevin Moore

After a very productive summer and fall off-season, where many kids worked their tails off to improve, the coaching staff was optimistic that the Varsity team could gel together and have a winning season.  The kids set high goals (winning both conference and Sectional) and the coaching staff believed it was a possibility if kids accepted their roles and produced with consistency.  Unfortunately we didn’t achieve either goal, but steps were taken in the right direction to make that happen in the very near future.

The Varsity team went 14-7 (2nd most wins in school history), including 8-2 in the EIAC (both loses to champion Franklin County).  The non-conference victories over Franklin Community and Connersville were two that really standout as cornerstone wins.  East Central girls’ Program had never beaten Franklin Community prior and we won @ their place in a very exciting game.  Connersville had dominated the match up (14 in a row), but that ended this year with a convincing home win on senior night.

The improvements made at the offensive end were nothing short of remarkable, with the team averaging nearly 12 points more per game this season.  However, what stands out is the terrific defense effort.  It actually improved on last year’s record breaking season.  The Trojans held opponents to a meager 36% shooting from the field (new record).  They also set a new average margin of victory record (10.1 points per game).  Another record breaking defensive stats is the team total for blocked shots (113).

Improved shooting and a more balanced attack can be attributed to the offensive improvement.  On the season, the team averaged 53ppg (41.5ppg the year before) and shot 41% from the field.  They connected on a new season high of 87 3-pt. baskets.  Also, because of the balanced attack, many people were involved which led to the new record of 266 assists in a season.

This season was obviously a successful one and hopefully a year which will be remembered as the turning point in the Program’s history.  In order to take that next step, much improvement is still needed to challenge for conference and Sectional championships.  If everyone continues to work hard, that opportunity should come.

 2009-2010 Season

Disappointing 8-12 Varsity Season

Front: Daniel Harm, Brittany Craig, Jordan Roell, Mandi McQueen, Josh Ashcraft
Standing: Head Coach Kevin Moore, Peyton Napier, Asst. Coach Mark Sandmann, Nicole Erhart, Sarah Packer, Emily Lehman, Beth Moorman, Shannon Broderick, Courtney Seamon, Asst. Coach Rick Moorman

Although the overall record (8-12) doesn't necessarily show it, the girls made tremendous strides in turning this "Program" around.  From a team standpoint, the defense was something to be very proud of.  On the season the girls held their opponents to a shooting percentage of 39%.  This is the lowest percentage in the "Program's" history!  The previous record was 39.2% during the 1994-1995 season.  Also, the Trojan opponents only averaged 44.5 points per game.  This total is the 3rd best in the "Program's" history and the lowest given up since 1996-1997.  They also beat a top-10 team for the first time in almost 15 years with their 41 - 39 victory over  conference-rival Greensburg
The year was also a tremendous learning experience for the girls.  Offensively, the team struggled to score points on many occasions during the season (thanks to their defense they still were competitive on most nights).  Because of the offensive struggles (only a 35% FG percentage & 18.6 turnovers a game), it showed the girls what areas we HAVE to improve in the off-season.  Great effort on the defensive end will win you many games...however, if you are struggling to put 40 points on the scoreboard, it's hard to win at the Varsity level.  On the season, the offensive average was only 41.5 points per game.
As the saying goes, "Basketball players are made in the summer."  It is going to take a lot of hard work in the gym and weight room to make the improvements necessary to win at the Varsity level.  The coaching staff has all the confidence in the world that this group of kids will motivate and push each other to make the "next step" in the rebuilding process...

With only 3 players being lost to graduation, hopes are high for next season...if everyone puts in the time and dedication success will be earned!
