TGSA’s Red Storm Policy

(approved by the TGSA Board on September 23, 2014)

(effective January 1, 2015)

TGSA is licensed to administer and effectuate recreational softball primarily for Trussville residents by the Trussville Parks & Recreation Board.  TGSA is proud to offer Travel ball to our girls as an option for more competitive softball.  Red Storm’s purpose is to provide the girls in our community an opportunity to play Travel ball while keeping their ties to the Park and the Trussville School System.

It should be recognized that travel ball is highly competitive and that each Red Storm coach is given broad discretion in handling team strategy, player selection and player decisions, i.e., positions, playing time, batting order, etc.  Any parent who decides to allow their child the opportunity to play on a Red Storm team accepts this environment.

While Red Storm teams practice at our Park, our rec players and teams take precedent and have first opportunity to practice time on our fields.  It is important to note that if games are rained out on Mondays, it will be the Board’s policy to reschedule those on Tuesday if at all possible.  Red Storm teams are responsible for their own equipment, including softballs.

Red Storm teams are under the TGSA umbrella and are subject to TGSA Board approval on a semi-annual basis. Any team or coach may request to be a Red Storm Team or Coach.  Red Storm teams must meet the following requirements:

  1. Each team is strongly encouraged to have as many Trussville players (meaning “attends Trussville city schools, Trussville resident or a player who has played in Trussville rec league”) as it can.  With that in mind, each team must have three (3) “Trussville players” on its roster, unless otherwise approved by the Board. Any school ball age teams must first comply with AHSSA rules, and the Board recognizes that a majority of players from Trussville cannot happen.
  2. The head coach must reside in Trussville, or have a daughter in the Trussville School System, or a daughter who has played in Trussville rec league and/or has coached in Trussville rec league, unless otherwise approved by the Board.
  3. The team must have a full roster (i.e., 10 for 8U and 9 for 10U) prior to Board approval (Nevertheless, a Red Storm coach would be approved prior to forming a team; if a team does not obtain full roster during the recruitment part of the season, the Board would decide whether to permit the team to practice and play in tournaments utilizing pick up players from within the Park or outside).  If a team loses a player during the season because a player quits or is injured or is cut by the team, that team may utilize “pick up” players.  However, a team will not be permitted to practice at our Park and be a Red Storm team if that team routinely picks up players every tournament, unless otherwise approved by the Board.
  4. Each Red Storm coach is Subject to the Coaching By-Laws and Policies as are TGSA’s Rec Coaches, including having a background check every 2 years.  In addition, the Red Storm coach must provide proof of proper insurance and proper sanctioning.  The Red Storm coach may have to provide financial updates to Board.
  5. Each Red Storm team will be given options to work tournaments at the Park for fundraising.
  6. Each Red Storm team must use the words “Red Storm” in their name, i.e. Red Storm 2000, Red Storm 02, etc. and must use the 2 logos approved(Red Storm logo above and/or script logo)
  7. There is a maximum of two teams per age group (one team per age year), unless otherwise approved by the Board.
  8. For the Fall, the flat fee to practice at our Park for an approved Red Storm team would be $500.  For the Spring, the flat fee would be $1,000 (if the team is a school ball team meaning they cannot begin travel activities until after school ball is over, the flat fee is $500).  However, if there are players on a Red Storm team who also play rec ball, the Rec registration fee is to be paid.  As an example, if a Red Storm team has one rec player in the fall, the flat fee would be reduced by $50 (2 players $100 and so on).  Example 2- if a Red Storm team has one rec player in the spring, the flat fee would be reduced by $100 (2 players, $200 and so on).
  9. Red Storm teams would be responsible for keeping the fields maintained as with Rec Coaches, i.e., bases pulled and plugs placed after each practice, dugouts cleaned and locking fields after practice, etc.
  10. Red Storm team coaches and/or parents must participate in Park work days.
  11. Red Storm teams are encouraged to play in the highest class ball based on the makeup of their team.  An older age group in a specific class is encouraged to play in Class A/B ball.  The younger age group in a specific class may play in C Class ball.

Red Storm players are encouraged to play rec ball too especially in the Fall, as that will only make the Park as a whole better.

If any parent of a Red Storm player has a complaint (meaning there is an allegation that the Red Storm coach violated a TGSA policy, Code(s) of Conduct and Park Rules), please email that complaint to any Board member and cc: the TGSA President.Complaints about team strategy, player selection or player positions (fielding position, playing time or batting order) are not actionable.
