USA Hockey Safe Sport
All players with a birth year of 2004 or earlier must take the SafeSport. (If you took it last year, you'll still need to do a refresher.) This is free, but you must get a USA Hockey Registration number first. As I recall, it will take an hour or more to complete so don't delay taking this. Until this is completed, players cannot be added to the roster or participate in any activities. Again, this is only for girls having a birth year of 2004 or earlier.
Our first on ice session will be the evening of September 12th. Fees will be determined once the number of girls on the roster is confirmed.
Feel free to call or email Don Matthews or Head Coach Jacque Rogers with any questions.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Sweet Valentine’s Super Seven
On Sunday, February 14th our Scouts defeated our old foe Warren 7-1. In an unfortunate one sided affair at Lake Forest College, the Scouts outshot the Warren ladies 41 to 8. We have enjoyed some tight battles with Warren over the years, especially in Gurnee, but tonight was not that occasion.
With no spectators allowed, we were forced into a technology-enabled Facebook broadcast from our homes as the bitter cold roared outside and LFC maintained its reputation as the coldest rink on the north shore. The game was essentially over in the first period as the Scouts scored 5 unanswered goals. Zip scored in the first minute unassisted and Emily got the second also unassisted two minutes later. Zip got her second goal assisted by Clarissa with approximately six minutes played. Nora got a goal assisted by Emily with three minutes to play and Lucy scored in the final two minutes with a solo effort. Goalie Sarah made two saves in the first period.
With the Facebook feed back in action, the game played out in similar fashion, albeit with the Scouts working on their passing game and moving the puck in all directions. Midway through the second, Alicia got a a nice feed from Clarissa to score our sixth goal of game and a minute later Abby spent two minutes in the box for a trip. We finished the period 6-0 with a running clock in the third. Sarah saved five in the second. With eight minutes left, Zip returned the favor from the first period with a nice pass to Clarissa who duly buried the puck in the back of the net and the game played out its conclusion with Scouts possession and 13 more shots. It ended 7-1 good guys. Sarah had one save in the final period.
Super Sunday Showdown and Shutout at Heartland
On Sunday, February 7th our Scouts kicked off the season with a 4-0 win over Evanston on a very cold Super Bowl Sunday. Hard to imagine we were having our first game of this Covid affected season during mid-February but, despite the masked parents and skaters, it felt good to be back in the rink and on the ice. The first period was fairly even with those pesky Wildcats registering 7 shots, the same as our Scouts. After some impressive combative board battling earlier in the period by our new freshman Nora, she took a quick pass from Katey P. and had a nice high goal eight minutes through the first period to give the Scouts a slender 1-0 lead after the first 13 minutes. Alicia and Tess both spent two minutes in the penalty box in the first period.
The second period followed a similar pattern with an uptick in “chippiness” from both teams. Goalie Sarah survived a barrage of 10 shots versus our 7 as the Evanston crew attempted to even the score and get back into the game. Another penalty for the Scouts, for Abby this time, left us short handed with four minutes left on the clock, but a nice pass from Alicia found Lucy with some space to skate into the zone for a second goal of the game, short-handed nonetheless. Scouts ended the period 2-0.
The third period saw another uptick in the physical play and, unfortunately, saw Abby spend two more minutes in the penalty box with seven left to play, but this time she had a friend and was accompanied by Evanston’s number 16. The game was still fairly even but Evanston outshot the Scouts 11 to 7 in the last period as they tried to get something past Sarah. With the clock winding down, there was a battle in the Evanston blue paint and Rachel was able to poke the puck under their goalie unassisted with three minutes to play. Scouts saved the best goal for last just one minute later as a feed from Clarissa in our own zone saw Emily accelerate down the middle supported by Katey P. Emily went to the left along with the Evanston goalie and pushed an unselfish feed to Katey who duly obliged by burying the biscuit for a really nice team goal. Scouts win 4-0. See the game broadcast on the Scouts Girls Ice Hockey page on Facebook.

Covid-19 Update
Illinois has classified hockey as a high risk sport and has limited current activities to practices and non-contact training.
There have been frequent meetings of the clubs with the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois (AHAI) and AHAI is coordinating an organized response to the states’s classification. They have assembled a team of people with health, hockey, athletics, legal, and political knowledge and expertise. They are working with USA Hockey and leadership from other states that have successfully petitioned for reclassification of hockey so that games can be played.
All Tier 1, 2, 3 and high school leagues will adhere to the state, county and local directives regarding Covid-19. Most leagues are planning/hoping that we may be able to play games by October. This is obviously a fluid situation.
The Scouts Board met earlier this week and agreed on the following:
- We will do everything in our power to have a regular/normal hockey season.
- The club will follow the guidelines set forth by state, county and local authorities.
- We will begin regularly scheduled practice sessions September 6th.
- For the time being, all of our ice slots will be used for practices until games are permitted. (All practice times will be listed on the website shortly.)
- Special protocols will be developed and enforced to ensure the safety of our players and coaches.
- As in previous years, 50% of player fees will be due at the beginning of the year and the remainder will come due in December.
As more information becomes available, we will share it with the group. We also plan on having a club meeting in early September to review the situation and address questions.
In the meantime, feel free to call or email me with any questions.

SCOUTS SENIOR NIGHT
SUPER SIX SENIOR SUNDAY
As our Scouts celebrated the four graduating seniors on Sunday we had a game to play against Evanston and get back to our winning ways, and we did it in some style with a dominant performance. Congratulations to Jessica, Kennedy, Maggie and Lillian and thank you for firing up your teammates for the first clean sheet of the new year with a 6-0 victory. We started strong and spent plenty of time in their zone in the first period but it took 10 minutes before Emily found the net and some blue paint scrambling, we ended the period 1-0. The second period was even higher intensity with Kennedy enjoying herself, cheered on by her teammates, she added 2 goals in the period sandwiched around a rocket from Abby to end the second period 4-0 which our Scouts dominated at both ends as Evanston failed to register a shot. Four star Stein added 2 more goals in the third to complete the 6-0 shutout. Goalie Sarah had 8 saves on the night and the Scouts had a season high 44 shots to end a high energy Scouts encounter.
MAINELY MAULED THIS TIME OUT
Our mighty Scouts fell to their first loss of the year in 2-4 loss to Maine on Wednesday, January 22. We started strong and scored in 3 minutes with Hannah scored on a pass from Lillian assisted by Alexis. Maine scored 2 goals in the second but our Scouts tied it up at the start of the third with Lillian scoring assisted by Abby and Alexis once again. Unfortunately, Maine scored 2 unanswered goals in the third and this time out our Scouts were second best. Sarah had 25 saves on the night and our Scouts had 22 shots in an even encounter.
NOT A BLUE MONDAY FOR THE SCOUTS
The Scouts overcame the Latin Blue team 4-1 to continue a solid start to 2020, the game was relatively evenly paced but some quality from Kennedy after a nice pass from Lillian got us the lead 1-0 at the end of the first period. The second period saw some better intensity from the Scouts but, unfortunately, Abby took a 10 minute major for a check from behind but Tess scored after some nice puck control from Hannah halfway through the period and the Katey/Alicia line scored a nice third in the dying embers of the second period to end the period 3-0. Kennedy added a fourth solo goal with 4 minutes to go after some mazy footwork and with 2 minutes to go Latin broke the clean sheet and the game ended 4-1 good guys. Sarah had 15 saves on the night.
FEISTY ROCKIN' REBELS
Our mighty Scouts battled to a feisty 3-3 against the Rebels at Rolling Meadows on Sunday, January 12th. The Rebels scored quickly in the first period and continued to cycle the puck with shots peppering Sarah until the last seconds of the period when Tess scored a breakaway solo goal to end the period 1-1. The second period was much of the same as the intensity increased and the physicality amped up but the period ended the same after Super Sarah thwarted the waves of Rebel attacks.
The Rebels took the lead half way through the third but seconds later Emily, accelerated onto a pass from Jessica, assisted by Zoe to tie the game. At this point, Emily was flying around the ice and the Scouts had some better puck possession. Three minutes, later the Rebels regained the lead but once again our Scouts returned the favor with Hannah scoring on a nice pass from Tess. The game ended 3-3 after Emily took a penalty with a minute remaining but we held on and the stats tell us the real story with Super Sarah recording 46 saves and our Scouts recorded 7 shots. A solid defensive effort in a very feisty affair.
NEW YEAR, NEW DECADE, SAME OLD 4 STAR STEIN
Our young Scouts team got off to winning ways in the New Year with a 6-1 victory over Evanston, sweet revenge for our 0-2 loss to the same team in the final game of 2019. Evanston started strong and shocked the Scouts with a goal in the first minute but Kennedy weaved her magic for a solo effort unassisted with 3 minutes left in the first and then Abby scored with an assist from Amy almost 1 minute later. The first ended 2-1 Scouts. The Scouts started strong in the second and Kennedy scored assisted by Amy and Alexis and followed that up with another solo effort for her hat trick and we ended the second period 4-1 up. Emily got on the scoreboard at the start of the third with another unassisted solo effort and in the dying embers of the game 4 star Stein added the icing on the cake assisted by Katie and Alicia as the Scouts run out easy winners this time around. Next game is those pesky Rebels, likely a sterner test.
SCOUTS HELP AT BEACON HOUSE SKATE OVER WINTER BREAK
SCOUTS WELCOME ALUMS TO THE ICE!
DOUBLE DIGIT DELIGHT
In a one-sided affair, our Scouts beat Warren 10-0 on Monday, December 2nd. In the first period, Lucy started the scoring and Lillian and Tess each scored with Kennedy finally getting on the board to end the period 4-0. The second period was much of the same with Emily scoring and Tess and Kennedy each adding a second to end the period. During the third period, Maggie scored, Tess got her hat trick and Lucy scored with 2 minutes left for the second on the night, funnily enough she started the onslaught and finished it off the 8 goal sandwich for a double digit 10-0 victory.
HEARTLAND HEARTBURN
Our Scouts came up against a well-organized Loyola team on Sunday, December 1st and came off second best 0-6 at Heartland Ice Arena. We ended the first period 0-2 down and played much of the game in our own zone. The second period continued much the same as Loyola maintained puck possession and our Scouts found scoring chances hard to come by and Loyola added 3 more goals. With a running clock in the third we ended the contest 0-6. Mighty Sarah registered 63 saves on the night, yes 63 - that is not a typo.
SUNDAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING WAS NO TURKEY
On Sunday, November 24th, our Mighty Scouts faced Latin Orange and dropped a 2-1 decision in an incredibly entertaining game played at a very fast pace. Caroline started in goal for the first time this year and was under pressure immediately. The Romans scored in the first period but our Scouts had opportunities on the counter and action was fast and furious. During the second period, Amy scored with a shot from the right assisted by Jessica and Scouts defense was holding tight until, unfortunately, Latin scored again and we ended the period down 1-2. The third period saw Tess and Maggie go close and the Scouts intensity was on the rise but the puck stayed out of the Romans net, neither team scored and game ended 1-2.
AN EVEN CONTEST, MAINELY
On Sunday, November 18th, our mighty Scouts battled out a 3-0 victory over Maine in a tight contest. The first period remained scoreless with the Scouts holding a one shot advantage 8 to 7 over Maine and also surviving a penalty by Abby. Kennedy finally opened the scoring with a freaking laser shot from the right wing after a mazy solo run up the ice, the Maine goalie was playing well though and the period ended with a tight 1-0 Scouts advantage. The third period started with Maine on the front foot and Goalie Sarah standing tall but, with 4 minutes left, Kennedy scored her second assisted by Tess. In the dying embers of the game, Katey got our insurance goal assisted by Amy after a melee in the blue paint. Goalie Sarah had 22 saves on the night for the shutout. The Scouts registered 23 shots.
FOURTH TIME'S THE CHARM
After a trio of tough losses to some of perennial powers in the Girls Metro League, our young Scouts team got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over neighbors Lake Forest Academy on Monday, November 11th. The Scouts got off to a lively start and scored quickly in the first with Kennedy managing to squeeze the puck over the line assisted by Hannah. The goal came after some sustained pressure as our defense kept the puck in the zone.
The second period saw a great individual goal from Caroline with a rocket “wrister” after a long, mazy skate from defense. Great effort all around. The third period got interesting as Lake Forest Academy pulled one back early in the period but the action quickly switched to the other end and Tess got our insurance goal after another great individual effort. The game featured two penalty shots, one for each team, that neither team could convert and goalie Sarah registered 17 saves on the night and the Scouts had 24 shots on net. Fingers crossed for the momentum to continue.
On Monday, November 4th, our Scouts played a competitive game against Upper Fox Valley but came out second best 1-5. Fox Valley scored early in the first and had plenty of puck possession and goalie Sarah stood strong. Emily scored a solo goal early in the second as the Scouts rallied to tie the game at 1-1, but we entered the third period 1-3 down after two late Fox Valley goals but a stronger Scouts second period. Unfortunately, Fox Valley got a couple more goals in the third to end the game. Goalie Sarah had 27 saves on the night and we registered 17 shots on net
On Sunday, November 3rd, our Scouts dropped a 2-8 decision to New Trier. We started the game strong and Tess scored in the first but, unfortunately, we had 8 unanswered goals before Tess got her second with less than a minute left on the clock assisted by Maggie. Amazingly, Sarah had 54 saves on the night and the Scouts registered 12 shots on goal.
On Sunday, October 13th, there was no horsing around from the Barrington Fillies as they downed our Scouts 7-1 at the Steel Barn in Crystal Lake. Tess did a lot of work to get us in the zone and her shot was rebounded by Kennedy in the second period. Goalie Sarah had 38 saves and the Scouts registered 11 shots on net.
CONGRATULATIONS TO KENNEDY STEIN!
The Scouts are proud to announce that senior Kennedy Stein has committed to play NCAA DIII hockey at Augsburg University next year!
Happy Halloween from the Scouts!
Gina Bronge Memorial Hockey Game
Scouts honor Gina Bronge in 12th Annual Gina Bronge Memorial Hockey game.
The Scouts took on a team of Chicago firefighters and police officers, as well as Glenbrook players, in memory of Gina.
SUPER SARAH COULDN'T SAVE THIS ONE!
Our trip 55 miles south to All Seasons Ice Rink in Naperville came early in the season this year, without a snowflake in sight for a change. But, unfortunately, we came out second best in a 5-0 defeat to Naper Valley. This team has been a formidable foe over the past 5 years and the challenge remains. We ended the first period just 1-0 down after Sarah made 22 saves under what seemed like relentless pressure from the pesky Naper Valley team.
The second period continued much like the first with sustained pressure from the home team who scored on the power play and added a third to end the second period with the Scouts 3-0 down and Sarah registering 21 more saves. We started the 3rd period more brightly and both Abby and Tess had some good breakaway opportunities and a couple of blue paint scrambles following some good support from teammates but the puck remained outside the net. We battled harder in the third, although the home team scored 2 more goals to end this battle 5-0. We registered 26 shots on the night and Sarah had 50 saves but even Super Sarah couldn't save this one. Onto Crystal Lake this Sunday.
SCOUTS PARTICIPATE IN FUNDRAISER & RAISE AWARENESS FOR SCOTT'S LAW
4 STAR STEIN
Our young and much changed Scouts team got off to a winning start on Sunday, September 22nd by beating our old foe Glenbrook 4-1 at the Northbrook Ice Arena. The inaugural goal of the season was made by Kennedy after a pass from Lillian and some pretty good early pressure from the Scouts. The pace increased a bit and Glenbrook responded shortly after but the deadlock was short lived. Kennedy scored 90 seconds later with a hard shot to the upper right after some good work from Emily. With two minutes left in the period, Kennedy got her hat trick unassisted after a couple of trademark toe-drags.
The second period was more evenly contested with Sarah making some good saves between the pipes and with neither team able to capitalize on the man advantage after exchanging penalties. Kennedy added a fourth goal for both her and the team with three minutes left in the third period as the Scouts ran out comfortable winners. We will face sterner tests in the coming weeks but a great start to the season for the many new faces on the team.
SCOUTS PARTICIPATE IN SHUTOUTS FOR SEIZURES
* When the team earns a shutout, people can choose to donate. The suggested donation is $5 per shutout but any amount is acceptable and appreciated!
* Some families enjoy donating immediately following each shutout. You can give your donation to Goalie Sarah or to her parents (Kim and Don Matthews).
* Some families prefer to donate at the end of the season once all of the shutouts are tallied up! If you prefer to donate this way, and want your gift to be tax-deductible, write your check to Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE).
* At the end of the season, Sarah will send the team donation to Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) based in Chicago.
Thank you for helping raise money for an epilepsy cure!
Let’s have a great season!
