NORTH STREET OVER 40 SLOPITCH LEAGUE - Rules Update May 2017
The basic rules of SPO Slow Pitch shall apply with the following modifications.
GENERAL RULES
1. Team rosters must be completed and submitted to League Officials by July 1 of the
playing year. League fees will be paid to League Officials by July 1.
2. All players are to be 40 years of age (the year of season), or older.
3. Female players are welcome on any team (age requirement may be waived). A player may be listed on only one team roster and may not leave one team for another team after playing all or part of one game for the first team during any one season, unless that team releases the player.
4. A player must be on a team’s roster by July 1 to be eligible for playoff action. This may be amended by a league vote if a player is injured and unable to play. If a player is replaced on the basis of a season ending injury and then returns due to a change in his/her circumstances, the player that replaced him must be removed from the roster. If this occurs after July 1 the player returning is eligible for the playoffs.
5. If a team cannot field enough players to start a game it may use a member(s) of another league team only. If the roster player(s) arrive later, the non-roster player may continue to bat but must yield the fielding position to the roster player. An opposition player may return to his/her team. A player who arrives late can only join the game at the start of an inning.
6. A team shall field no more than 10 players at a time. All team members present at game must bat if they are added to the playing roster. This requirement may be modified if both teams agree to allowing a roster player to not play a position. A player listed on the roster who is unable to take his turn at the plate shall be deemed out.
7. Substitutions on the field may be made at any time and the substituted player may return to the field at any time to any position.
8. A courtesy runner may be used for the batter, but only after the batter has reached at
least first base. A courtesy runner cannot be used after the initial batter has reached second or third base through a hit by the player following them in the order. There is no limit to how many times a specific player can be used as a courtesy runner or the number of courtesy runners used throughout the game.
9. The first game will start at 6:15. Game two is at 7:30 and game three is at 8:45.
Continuous play - be ready! All games shall be 7 innings.
10. If a game is running long a new inning cannot start later than 10 minutes before the
scheduled start of the next game (i.e. 7:20). The game shall be declared over when the
home team completes its at bat. Teams should notify each other of any timing issues to
allow for agreement on a shorter game length.
11. All games will count toward determining post-season placement.
12. A rained out game does not count as a game played for tie breaking purposes.
13. Regular season games can end in a tie.
14. The home team shall supply a new ball while the visiting team shall supply a good quality second ball.
15 Scorebooks are to be used by each team to record their lineup and scoring for each
game. First and last names (or initial) are to be recorded. Please note players who have hit home runs on an area of your scoresheet.
16. Any on-field disputes should be brief and limited to team captains or designates.
17. Teams should bring a copy of the SPO official rules and a copy of this modified rules
list to all games.
PLAYING RULES - Modifications
1. The Catcher will call strikes and balls at the plate. A strike will be recognized if the ball
strikes home plate. A ball may be called if the Catcher deems the pitched ball did not meet arc requirements. The Catcher will also deem if a ball is fair or foul down both lines.
2. The 1st Base Coach shall make calls at 1st Base and Home Plate. The 3rd Base Coach shall make calls at 2nd Base and 3rd Base.  NOTE: In post-season umpire(s) decisions will supercede rules 1 and 2.
3. A foul ball on the third strike will constitute an out.
4. There shall be no leading off any base. A base may be over-run providing there is no
attempt by the runner to advance to the next base (base umpires have discretion to determine the base runners intent and judge accordingly). Leaving any base without the ball being batted will constitute a lead-off runner(s) who will be declared out.
5. There is no sliding or diving back to a base. Any such action will result in the runner
being declared out.
6. The SPO standard tag up and infield fly rules are in effect.
7. The SPO home run rule is in effect (batter and base runners do not have to reach next base).
8. If the ball is overthrown at 1st Base and goes out of bounds the runner shall be given
2nd base. If a runner is on 2nd base the runner shall be awarded 3rd base. If the bases
are loaded all runners advance with the runner at 3rd Base scoring.
9. If a runner attempts to advance on a batted ball and is caught between bases, the
defensive team can throw to the lead base thereby locking out that base, and then
throwing to the base from which the runner advanced to lock out that base and force the
runner out (eliminating the run-down). A runner may be tagged out while running to 1st,
2nd or 3rd base but not between 3rd and home plate.
