Quamba Cubs vs Mora Blue Devils
Friday, June 20th - Mora @ 730pm
Quamba 7, Mora 6
On Friday, June 20, the Quamba Cubs traveled to Mora for an Eastern Minnesota League North Class C matchup against the Blue Devils. Quamba jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning off of a couple walks, a hit by pitch and some timely hitting by Lucas Athey Jr. Both teams traded runs in the third and fourth innings, keeping the game tight. For Mora those runs were driven in by a Nathan Nelson double and then an RBI fielders choice by Nick Hoffman. With the score 6-4 after 4 innings things began to settle down. Mora starter, Nathan Nelson, settled in for a couple of strong innings to get through 6 innings. Quamba reliever Logan Sjoberg, pitched very effectively in relief of James Oslin.
Quamba added an insurance run in the eighth when Cole Gmahl tripled and was then driven in by Jagger Steiner. This extended their lead to 7-4. Mora mounted a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, plating two runs. They had bases loaded with nobody out. Lucas Athey came in and did an outstanding job getting the Cubs out of the jam. The Blue Devils fell just short as Quamba held on for a 7-6 victory.
For the Blue Devils, Nathan Nelson pitched six innings, allowing six hits and six runs—only three of which were earned. For the Cubs, James Oslin and Logan Parker-Sjoberg each contributed with four innings on the mound. Lucas Athey Jr. came in to pitch the ninth, shutting things down to earn the save.
Offensively, the Cubs were led by Cole Gmahl and Lucas Athey Jr. Gmahl had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple while scoring four of Quamba’s seven runs. Athey Jr. went 2-for-5 at the plate, driving in three runs to help secure the win.
Noteable Performances:
Quamba Cubs:
Cole Gmahl - 3-4, 2B, 3B, 4 R, BB, 2 SB
Lucas Athey Jr. - 2-5, 3 RBI, R, 1 IP, SV
Mora Blue Devils:
Nathan Nelson - 2-5, 2B, RBI, R, BB, 6 IP, 2 K
